Premiership: Gulf in Class?

Bookmakers VC Bet go 13/2 that newly promoted Wigan (versus Chelsea), Sunderland (v Charlton) and West Ham (v Blackburn) to ALL LOSE on the opening day of the season.

Alternatively, the firm quote the three promoted sides at 33/1 to ALL WIN.

”Wigan will be no pushovers this season and they will fancy their chances of catching Chelsea cold at the start of the campaign,” said VC Bet’s Nick Blezard.

The 2005/6 Premiership season starts on August 13.

Saints and Canaries backed for Cola glory

Bookies VC Bet report that relegated Southampton and Norwich have seen some serious fiscal interest to win next season’s Coca Cola Championship.

The pair are currently losers for more than £100k with odds man Nick Blezard conceding that both teams will almost certainly challenge strongly for automatic promotion in 2005/6.

”If Saints can hold onto Peter Crouch they will take some serious stopping in my opinion. His height will be a massive weapon for life in the Championship and it would appear that many of our ante-post punters agree.

”All the indications are that Norwich boss Nigel Worthington is hanging onto his best players and the recent news that star keeper Robert Green is committing to the club will help their cause enormously.”

The weight of ante-post money has seen Norwich cut from 8s to 11/2 with Southampton in from 6s to 11/2. Blezard added that despite the obvious quality of the ex-Premiership pair, he fancied bigger priced 28/1 Coventry and 66/1 Burnley to go well.

”Coventry boss Micky Adams has pulled off a major coup in getting young striker Gary McSheffrey to sign a new contract. ”I really fancy him to make a name for himself next season and could be worth a look in the top scorer lists at massive odds.

”And Burnley looked a good thing for a play-off place last season at the three-quarter stage only to fall short. ”But Steve Cotterill has since strengthened his squad with some solid signings and they can be expected to upset some of the bigger sides in this division.”

PLATE PLUNGE ON PAVILIONS
*************************
Sat Jun 25
There seems to be plenty of confidence in Far Pavilions for Saturday’s Northumberland Plate (3.15) at Newcastle, after a betting plunge on Tuesday saw his price collapse from 6/1 into 7/2 favourite. The six-year-old gelding is on a four-timer after impressing at Musselburgh, Nottingham and Catterick, and is rated by his trainer, Alan Swinbank, as one of the best horses he’s trained. That includes last month’s Group 2 winner Collier Hill so, off a mark of 98 in this handicap, he’s fancied to continue his winning streak. The biggest danger looks to be the Mark Johnston-trained Golden Quest, who traveled strongly in the two-and-a–half mile Ascot Stakes last week, going down by the minimum margin after not being touched with the whip.
Latest bet365 betting … Far Pavilions 7/2, Golden Quest 13/2, Balyan 8/1, Coconut Beach 9/1, Odiham, Peak of Perfection 10/1, others on bet365 website.
Northumberland Plate Pick: Far Pavilions at 7/2

HURRICANE HOPING TO STORM THE CURRAGH
*************************************
Sun Jun 26
The Irish Derby (3.50) is run at the Curragh on Sunday, and Andre Fabre’s Hurricane Run will be all the rage after an unlucky defeat by Shamardal in the French Derby. The winner has since franked the form last week at York, but the likely odds-on jolly will be running on ground faster than he’s ever run, so could be worth opposing each-way with Shalapour. This one looked to be on the upgrade, having won the Classic Trial at Gowran Park last month, and trainer John Oxx has his horses in fine form, as Azamour and Beautyandthebeast proved last week.
Irish Derby Pick: Shalapour (each-way)

IRISH CHALLENGER TO PAY UP
**************************
The Irish always mount a serious challenge for the bigger races at Uttoxeter, and this year’s Summer National (4.25) is no exception, with Pay Forward fancied to take the prize back across the Irish Sea. Trained by Jessica Harrington, the seven-year-old was unsuited by the bad ground over the winter, but came out on a sound surface at the Punchestown Festival to beat the Scottish National winner, Joes Edge, by two lengths (the Irish National winner Numbersixvalverde was back in fifth). With the ground riding fast, he will take all the beating. On the same card, the in-form stable of Evan Williams can strike with Danish Decorum (3.20), who looked a smart two-mile chaser when winning on the track last month.
Summer National Pick: Pay Forward

BANK ON SERGIO FOR CLASSIC
**************************
Th Jun 23 – 21.00 BST (SS2)
Fr Jun 24 – 21.00 BST (SS2)
Sa Jun 25 – 20.00 BST (SS2)
Su Jun 26 – 20.00 BST (SS2)
On course form and current form, Sergio Garcia simply has to be backed for this week’s Barclays Classic at 8/1 (live on Sky Sports). Twice a winner from five starts here, and an incredible 50 under par for his 20 rounds, the only doubt is whether he’s got over his US Open exploits, where he finished in a tie for 3rd, only a week after winning the Booz Allen. Still, the evidence is so compelling that it would be foolish to leave him out of any staking plan this week. He is second favourite to Vijay Singh (4/1), who is also a dual winner here (back in 1993 & 1995), but Garcia has finished ahead of Singh on all five occasions they have played together at Westchester, and this week will be no different. The other main pick goes to Bo Van Pelt, who should be mentally fresh after sitting out of the Open, and who can boast three top-10’s in the last couple of months. He’s certainly playing better than last year, when he managed to finish ninth in this event, which makes his price of 40/1 even more attractive. A hunch bet is Joe Durant, whose price of 80/1 looks way too big considering he’s finished 3rd and 7th in his two starts, and was 5th in the Players Championship against a much stronger field.
Barclay’s Classic Three Off the Tee: Sergio Garcia @ 8/1; Bo Van Pelt @ 40/1; Joe Durant @ 80/1 (Each-way ¼ odds 1.2.3.4.5). Live In-Play betting available.

LIONS GAMBLE COULD BLACK FIRE
*****************************
Sa Jun 25 – 8.10 BST (SS1)
The British Lions completed their warm-up matches for the Test series against New Zealand by overcoming Southland by 26-16. A much bigger scoreline would have been expected, however, after an early try by Gavin Henson saw them race into a 10-0 lead. After that, they conceded too many turnovers at the breakdown and needed a last-minute penalty to take the match beyond the reach of the hosts, so it’s no surprise that we’ve given them a 9-point start for the 1st Test at Christchurch on Saturday (ko 8.10, live in-play betting available). In that game, the Lions will field eight of the England World Cup-winning squad, including Jonny Wilkinson who makes a rare start at inside centre. This is a contentious move that comes at the expense of Henson, who misses out completely. The Lions are 5/2 for the three-Test series, with the All Blacks at 2/7 (Draw 20/1). New Zealand can also be backed at 2/7 for the 1st Test and, on the evidence of England’s recent performances, they’re difficult to oppose. They can be backed with some confidence on the handicap too at 10/11 (-9.0 points).
1st Test Pick: New Zealand (-9.0) @ 10/11

DEREK FAVOURITE FOR BOOT
************************
Ch 4
Derek and Roberto were both saved from the boot last week, after a last minute gamble on Sam to be evicted proved to be spot on. However, one of them must go on Friday, after they were both chosen by their housemates in Tuesday’s nominations. And, the early betting suggests that Derek will be the first man to leave the house. The posh Tory is 1/3 to be packing his bags on Friday (Roberto is 2/1). In the Outright market, there has been a succession of favourites, but the most popular housemate in the betting recently has been Craig, who is now 15/2 from 20/1. The camp crimper has received only one nomination so far and seems to be well liked in the house.

England v Bangladesh NWS Preview

As the build up to the Ashes gains momentum, England travel to Leeds next to entertain Bangladesh at Headingley. Fine batting performances and a shock victory against the Aussies have left the Bangers in confident mood, but is another gutsy performance too much to ask?

If you’re tempted to have a bet on Sunday’s match, check out the spread betting markets provided by Sporting Index. As well as being able to back a batsman or bowler to perform well, you can also bet on those which you think will perform badly. So, with £100 cash on offer to all new clients* (see below for full details), you could be celebrating no matter which team wins. Here are our thoughts ahead of the match:

Hed Bangers

England’s batsmen have certainly taken a liking to the Bangladesh bowling, and we should see plenty of top notch batting again from both sides on Sunday. The problem for Bangladesh is that although they’re capable of scoring a decent number of runs, their bowlers are not good enough to restrict England’s openers.

In Mohammed Ashraful and Aftab Ahmed, the visitors have two very good batsmen, both of whom excelled last time around against England. However, Headingley tends to offer a lot to swing bowlers, so they could be given a torrid time by Gough and Lewis. On the other hand, good weather will certainly help batsmen at this ground, so there’s a chance that both sides will get a similar amount of runs as at Trent Bridge. Considering the form that England are showing, 400 runs could be on the cards!

All Blacks v Lions Preview

The first big clash of the summer is almost upon us, as New Zealand entertain the British and Irish Lions on Saturday morning. Any early risers planning to have a punt the game should check out the spread betting markets on offer at Sporting Index. They allow you to back players to perform well or badly, and you can bet on the outcome of the Series as a whole, as well as each game. With a free £100 cash on offer to new clients*(see below for full details), you could be celebrating over breakfast no matter who wins. If you’re struggling for inspiration, read on for our thoughts on the 1st Test:

First Blood
Sir Clive’s team selection seems to be something of a gamble, and many pundits expect it to backfire. The inclusion of Wilkinson at inside centre is certainly a surprise, however the strength of the bench is of even greater concern. Sporting Index have priced up the All Blacks to win by a margin of 8 to 11 points; before the tour started the spread was originally 3 to 6. This shows just how poorly the Lions have played so far. With the exception of the victory against Otago, there have been no classic performances.

The Lions will field a very defensive team, so expect them to kick to the corners and press New Zealand from the outset. Rain is a distinct possibility on Saturday, and this may help the visitors break up play and stifle the All Blacks. If the Lions deviate from the game plan, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the home side win convincingly. The visitors are no match for a free-flowing New Zealand side, so discipline and structure will be vital.

On a brighter note, Richie McCaw is rated as doubtful - his absence would be a major boost for the Lions. If he does make it though, his battle with fellow flanker Neil Back will be a key factor in deciding this one. The partnership of Wilkinson and O’Driscoll at the back is also important; if they click, the visitors will have a good chance of edging this one. If they don’t, expect Ryan Jones to get a run out from the bench. He’s a good ball carrier and there aren’t too many of those in this Lions team.

All in all, it should be a very close game. Understandably, the All Blacks are everyone’s favourites, however if anyone can pull of a tactical masterstroke it’s Sir Clive Woodward. Don’t be surprised if the Lions start the Series with a roar.

Big Brother Spread Betting Update

If England’s heroic performances in the cricket, or even another bout of Henmania doesn’t quite hit the spot, then perhaps the goings on in the Big Brother house have grabbed your punting attention this summer?

With bookies reporting record betting numbers for this year’s show, it’s well worth checking out the spread betting markets on offer. bethilo allow you to back contestants to do well or badly, and they even pay out on the last five remaining housemates - giving much better value than an each-way bet. With a free £25 cash on offer to new clients* (see below for full details) you could be better off no matter who wins. Here are a few of our thoughts on this year’s bunch:

Maxwell House?

bethilo has seen plenty of punters bet ‘low’ on (sell) Science over the last week, which is no surprise at all. His terminally confrontational approach is winning him few friends inside or outside the house. The Leeds based rapper, along with Derek and Roberto, seem certain to be up for eviction on Friday.

Craig is shaping up to be the dark horse. Initially loathed for his un-compromising views and constant bitching about fellow housemates, Craig went on to prove this was in fact an act, and that in reality he can be quite vulnerable and insecure. If anything, this has made him seem more human. Having survived the first two evictions, he is more relaxed, witty and not afraid to stand up to the alpha males of the group. Past experience shows us that people who are not prepared to change adapt generally do poorly (Kitten, Tim, Federico), and the public are warming to the dressing-gown-clad hairdresser.

Maxwell looks opposable at this stage. If you look at the history of the show, the key to winning is peaking at the right time and Max may have peaked too early. He is becoming besotted with Saskia, and by sticking up for her in the row with Roberto and Derek, he may have made some enemies in the house. Also, his decision to replace food on the shopping list with cans of cider will go down like the proverbial lead balloon! At the moment he is treading a fine line between cheeky cockney ‘geezer’ and obnoxious lager lout.

Makosi is certainly the main contender for Top Female at this stage. The worry here is that Big Brother has the right to send new housemates in at any stage, and may do so sooner rather than later, after three female evictions in three weeks. In order to redress the male-female ratio, BB may introduce some ladies into the house; a tactic that will have implications for such an obviously fragmented set of cliques this year. Top Male is much trickier, with a much stronger set of characters than amongst the females. At this stage, Kemal seems to be the market leader.

England v Australia Preview

The Aussies have lost four times in the space of a week, and will go into Thursday’s match at Durham with confidence at an all-time low. They now face the prospect of losing to England for the fifth time in succession, and many punters are getting behind the home side citing more than just patriotism as a reason.

If you’re tempted to have a wager on the NatWest Series, it’s well worth checking out the spread betting markets provided by bethilo. They’re offering clients the chance to bet on the clashes between England and Australia as a whole, meaning that your punting decisions are not completely affected by which side wins the toss for each game. With a free £25 cash on offer to all new clients* (see below for full details), it’s a good time to get to grips with spread betting before the start of the Ashes.

Here are our thoughts on Thursday’s match:

Wise Words

It has certainly come as a surprise, but Australia’s bowlers are starting to show their age. They have definitely missed the all-round ability of Symonds, and of course Brett Lee’s raw pace. On top of that, skipper Ponting has only made one run from his last 16 balls, which doesn’t bode well for the team. Far from invincible, the visitors have handed England a massive psychological boost, albeit at an early stage.

The Riverside has only staged four internationals, and as such is a bit of an unknown quantity. Expect it to play similarly to Bristol, with around a 250 run average at this level. It’s Harmison’s home ground, but that doesn’t guarantee a good performance, as Lewis demonstrated at Bristol on Sunday. The possible return of spin bowler Giles could mean more woe for Australia’s batsmen, although England’s batting may suffer slightly as he’s expected to take Solanki’s place in the team.

Despite their dismal start to the summer, the Aussies are marginal favourites for this one. This poor run is sure to end, and with Symons back they should be a lot stronger. Expect Ponting to improve; a batsman of his quality should be able to overcome the technical flaws exposed by England’s bowlers in the last few matches. Hayden is one to watch, only a brilliant Collingwood catch stopped him at Bristol and in this form it may take something special to restrain him at Durham.

ENGLAND STILL BIG TO BELITTLE AUSSIES

Engalnd are 10/3 for the Ashes after their crushing Twenty20 win over Australia on Monday evening.

The 100-run winning margin highlighted the supremacy on the day of England, although the win will be of little significance when the Ashes begins on July 21. However, it will have provided a psychological boost ahead of the NatWest Series, which gets under way on Thursday morning.

England are 13/8 to win the Series, with the Aussies at 4/9 (Bangladesh 100/1), and that’s a price which looks worth taking.

Pick: England to win the NatWest series @ 13/8

Wimbledon Preview

Inaccurate weather forecasts and over-priced strawberries can only mean one thing ??? the return of Wimbledon. The bookies have made Federer clear favourite to lift the men's title for the third year in a row, but let's face it, it wouldn't be Wimbledon without the odd upset.

If you've seen the seedings and are tempted to have a punt on the tournament, you should have a look at the spread betting markets served up by Sporting Index. With £100 free cash on offer to new clients* (see below for full details), and a massive range of markets to bet on (including Total Tournament Tie Breaks and Longest Final Set) you could be celebrating with a jug of Pimm's, no matter who lifts the trophy! Here are our thoughts on the draw to help you get started:

Paper Tiger

In the men's draw, four of the five top seeds have won a Grand Slam and also been ranked World Number One at some point. Roger Federer, the defending champ and current Number One, may be the hottest odds-on favourite in years to lift the trophy, and the draw's been kind to the Swiss maestro. He shouldn't even have to break sweat to reach the quarter-finals.

In contrast, second seed Andy Roddick can't be thrilled at the prospect of a potential second round meeting with giant Croatian Ivo Karlovic, a repeat of the Stella Artois final. Sporting Index are offering Ace Supremacy and Total Aces markets throughout the tournament, it'll be interesting to see what their predictions are for that particular match!

French Open champion Rafael Nadal may not yet have reached number one, but is sure to catch the public's attention, despite being somewhat of an unknown quantity on grass. The Spanish prodigy's incredible speed and retrieval skills may prove insufficient on grass when exposed to a specialist's serve and volley tactics. However a fair draw has given him a chance to adapt in the early rounds, before a potential meeting with yet another exciting teenage prospect Richard Gasquet in Round 3.

Wimbledon champ of 2002, Lleyton Hewitt, has a tricky quarter of the draw to negotiate with Safin, Ancic, and a returning Philippoussis to contend with. The Aussie could be in for a very tough tournament, and it won't be a surprise to see him heading home early. Tim Henman will be hoping for faster conditions than recent years, perhaps the All England Club's new policy of opening the balls on court, rather than a week before, could do the trick for a British victory! Yet another favourable draw for the 'Tiger' sees him with a fairly comfortable run, until a potential meeting with old adversary Grosjean. If he does manage to beat the Frenchman, he may be left with the simple task of beating Federer in order to reach the final!

In the women's event Maria Sharapova looks to be the player to beat. The 18-year-old has won her last 17 matches on grass, including of course last year's event. She'll face stiff competition, however, from the likes of Serena Williams, who has reached the final on her last three visits here. Watch out for feisty Belgian Justine Henin-Hardenne, who has won her last four tournaments, and of course Lindsay Davenport who should never be underestimated.

Golf: Greg backed for Booz bonanza

Bookies VC Bet report good money for straight-driving Greg Owen at this week’s Booz Allen Classic which takes place at Congressional Golf Club.

The firm’s opening quote of 125/1 has taken an early hammering with golf compiler Richard Friend monitoring the situation closely. ”It’s a really high quality field at Congressional with the likes of Singh, Mickelson, Els and Furyk strongly vying for the place positions.

”On that basis 125/1 is a fair opening quote as Greg will have to produce something special to make the frame on a course he’s never played at. "That said, he's long and straight and could well fare better than most here."

Last week’s runner up Fred Couples has seen solid support at 66/1 as has Luke Donald at 28s. ”Couples has won at Congressional before and if his back stands up he’s got a sniff. He’s now a 50/1 chance with us.

”Donald has his band of loyal followers and if the course is set up with tough rough you’d have to imagine his straight hitting standing him in decent stead.

Eight of the top 10 players in the Official World Golf Ranking tee it up on a 7,232 yard, par 71 Blue Course that is expected to be set up with next week’s US Open in mind. The tournament moves to Congressional while renovations are being carried out at its regular home of the Players’ Club of Avenel.

Rugby Union: All Blacks narrow for series success

VC Bet report solid recent support for the All Blacks to win the forthcoming three match series against the British & Irish Lions.

The firm’s rugby odds compiler Nick Wilson trimmed Graham Henry’s men from 2/5 to 4/11 on the eve of the Lions’ 36-14 win against Taranaki. ”

I was 4/9 about the All Blacks when I opened the book back in April and then went 2/5 after the Lions drew against Argentina,” said Wilson. ”At 4/11 the All Blacks are shortest I’ve been so far and I wouldn’t want to be laying them for fortunes because playing at home will be a massive advantage to them.”

VC Bet make Sir Clive Woodward’s side 2/1 to win the series with the draw rated a 16/1 chance. The tourists’ next match is against the New Zealand Maori on Saturday.

Tennis: Wimbledon outsiders chopped

Victor Chandler Bet have cut Xavier Malisse and Robin Soderling’s respective Wimbledon odds after the pair produced impressive displays on grass this week.

Malisse was cut from 100s to 50/1 after pushing Lleyton Hewitt over three tight sets at Queens Club while Soderling was chopped from 150s to 66/1 after the tall Swede gave world No1 Roger Federer a fright at the Gerry Weber Open.

”Malisse looked very dangerous against Hewitt and is possibly returning to his 2002 grass form when he made the semis at Wimbledon,” said VC Bet’s tennis judge Ivan Stojanovic. ”And Soderling played some really good aggressive tennis against Federer to get within two points of winning the match.

”The key to beating Federer on grass is to keep him away from the net as much as possible and it looked like Soderling did just that. ”He seems to thrive on courts with low bounce and could be a live dangerman in a couple of weeks.”

Federer remains the firm’s 4/7 favourite to make it a hat-trick of Wimbledon titles. Aussie Open champion Marat Safin has seen some lumpy each-way support this week at 33/1.

Tiger Woods is a three-time winner here, but his lack of consistency and domestic worries make him a favourite to take on this week. Vijay Singh, now back in his rightful place of world No.1, is a much more reliable betting proposition, and a bigger price at 13/2 (7/1 in our Enhanced Win Only market!). His form figures of 3-2-2-1-5-21-1-3 since March, and the fact that he’s made the top ten six times on this course (winner in 1997), suggests that he’ll be very hard to beat this week. Kenny Perry is a streaky player who should be backed when he’s in form and, if he plays the way he did demolishing the Colonial field a couple of weeks ago, the rest may as well go home. Forget his missed cut last week as it was on a course where he has underperformed in the past, and this dual course winner will feel much more at home here. As an outsider, I like the look of Justin Rose. His performances in the States have been much better of late (13th at Colonial), while this tournament provided him with one his best finishes of last season, 4th to Ernie Els.

Motivator has been favourite since winning the Dante Stakes at York, and there’s no doubt he’s got the speed and stamina required to win it. However, 9/4 is a very short price now, and there may be concerns about him acting on fast ground around Epsom. Of his rivals, there has been a big plunge this week on the Aidan O’Brien-trained Gypsy King, in anticipation of jockey Kieran Fallon being confirmed for the ride. The Fallon factor could well see him challenging Motivator for favoritism on the day but there’s no getting way from the fact that Fallon found it hard to choose between the unbeaten Gypsy King and his stablemate, Oratorio. The latter must have a great chance of reversing Irish Guineas form with Dubawi, who must be rated a doubtful stayer over the trip, and could well do best of the Ballydoyle runners. However, there are strong reasons for backing another Irish-trained runner, the David Wachman-trained Fracas. Winner of all three of his career starts (including Classic trials at Sandown and Leopardstown), he will be well suited to the end to end gallop, and should have no trouble seeing out the trip, unlike some of his rivals.
Nigel’s Derby Pick: Fracas @ 12/1

Epsom Oaks, 1m 4f

In Friday’s Oaks, the favourite Eswarah will take all the beating, but she’s a short price for what she’s actually achieved on the track, plus connections would have preferred to see a drop more rain around this week. So, lets plump for Lupe Stakes winner Something Exciting instead. She simply hacked up at Goodwood, and the feeling is that if she was trained by one of the bigger yards (her trainer David Elsworth has yet to train a Classic winner) then she’d be a lot shorter price.

As always the challenge from the Emerald Isle is strong, but this years bunch are formidable – we go 11/10 that the winner will be trained in Ireland! Their team is headed by Droopy’s Maldini, who is a worthy 8/1 favourite but, in a competition where many of the principals are early-paced railers who don’t trap or quite get home over the trip, the best angle for a bet may be to find a strong running wide. And, the one that looks sure to give us a good run for our money is Siesta Frisby (16/1), whose 28.48 clocking over course and distance last week would have been enough to win six of the last seven Derby finals. His trainer, Mick Puzey, describes him as only being 85% fit right now, which means he’s going to improve throughout the competition, and peak for the final on July 2nd, granted luck in running of course! Last year’s runner-up Big Freeze is another who will improve fitness wise, and his price of 40/1 is irresistible each-way, while Westmead Hawk’s (33/1) brilliant middle pace can see him go a long way too.

IBF light-welterweight title - Kostya Tszyu vs Ricky Hatton
Sa Jun 4 – 23.00 BST (SBO – Sky Box Office)
Ricky Hatton’s unblemished 38-fight professional record goes on the line when he steps into the ring as underdog to face Kostya Tszyu in the early hours of Sunday (about 2am). However, ‘Hitman’ Hatton, who at the age of 36 is 10 years Tszyu’s junior, will be desperate to prove himself against one of the best fighters in the world in his home city of Manchester, and could have what it takes to beat the very best. Hatton warmed up for his biggest test by becoming the first man to stop American veteran Ray Oliveira in the 10th round in London last December, and he’s been preparing for this contest with more focus than ever. In our ‘Total Rounds’ betting we think the contest is favourite to go over 8.5 rounds at 4/5 (10/11 under), with Hatton a 4/1 shot (same price for Tszyu) to win ‘by Decision or Technical Decision.’ Once the fight gets under way, we’ll also have Live In-Play betting.
bet365 ‘To Win Fight’ prices … Kosta Tszyu 1/2, Ricky Hatton 15/8
