How Does the Golden Boot Index Work?

At the beginning of the season, bethilo chooses 16 of the Premiership's top strikers, and then makes a prediction on how each striker will fare over the course of the season. Each striker's position on the Golden Boot Index is determined by a points system. The number of points awarded to a player is based on where bethilo think each striker will finish the season, in terms of goals, in relation to the other 15 players chosen.

Example

Take Tottenham's Jermain Defoe as an example. bethilo is currently predicting 17 to 20 points for the England star. You therefore have a relatively straight forward choice to make:

a) Will Defoe finish the season in 5th place or higher (ie awarded 20 points or more)?

or

b) Will Defoe finish the season in 6th place or lower (and be awarded less than 17 points)?

Let's say you think that Defoe is set to bang in the goals this season. You would therefore buy (bet 'high') at 20 points for the stake of your choice e.g. GBP2 per point.

If Defoe goes on to have a free-scoring season and finishes 3rd in the Golden Boot Index, he's then awarded 33 points. You would win thirteen times your stake:

(33 – 20) x your stake = 13 x £2 = £26 profit

However, you could also end up losing more than your original stake. Let's say you bet 'high' on Defoe at 20 points, but he ends up having a disappointing season, finishing 7th on the Golden Boot Index. ie awarded 14 points. You would therefore lose 6 times your stake:

(14 – 20) x your stake = -6 x £2 = £12 loss

Remember that with the Premiership Golden Boot Index, it's not the number of goals each striker scores that counts, it's how well they do in relation to the other 15 players on the Index that really matters.

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE MATCHES

It’s the return matches in the Champions League next week when PSV and AC Milan will be attempting to improve on their goalless draw in the last round of games while Schalke 04 and Fenerbahce who shared a six goal thriller last time also do battle in Group E on Tuesday.

Lyon will be looking to complete the double over Olympiacos in Greece and Rosenborg play hosts to Real Madrid having lost 4-1 to the Spanish giants at the Bernabeu in Group F.

In Group G title holders Liverpool who are 16-1 to retain their trophy with VC Bet beat Anderlecht 1-0 away and will be hoping to repeat that victory at Anfield and VC Bet’s 7-2 favourite Chelsea go to Real Betsis on the back of a 4-0 win against them at Stamford Bridge.

150-1 chance Rangers travel to Artmedia and will be looking to improve on their goalless draw at Ibrox while Inter Milan, who are fourth favourites at 15-2 with VC Bet, will be seeking revenge against Porto having lost 2-0 in the away leg in their Group H.

On Wednesday Brugge who beat Rapid Vienna 1-0 in Austria should have the edge in the home fixture while Juventus, who are currently on offer at 7-1 with VC Bet, will be attempting to reverse their 2-1 defeat against the German champions Bayern Munich in the Group A matches. Bayern are rated a 10-1 chance with VC Bet to lift the trophy.

Arsenal who are also 10-1 with VC Bet should have too many guns for Sparta Prague at Highbury and Ajax go to FC Thun having beaten the Swiss side 2-0 at home in Group B.

Both the Barcelona v Panathinaikos and Werder Bremen v Udinese matches ended in draws in the last round of matches in Group C as did the games between Benfica v Villareal and Lille v Manchester United in Group D. Both Villareal and the Red Devils will be anxious for points to ensure qualification into the knock out stage. United are on offer at 12-1 with VC Bet.

OLLIE STAKES HIS CLAIM

OLLIE MAGERN’s ultimate target is the Blue Riband of chasing and the seven-year-old took a step in the right direction by winning Saturday’s Charlie Hall Chase in breathtaking style.

Keen to post he was soon in command of his field putting in a fluent display of slick and fast jumping before holding off the challenge of Kingscliff on the run in. Available at 25-1 with VC Bet for the Cheltenham Gold Cup before the race, Ollie Magern was immediately cut to 14-1, and further support caused reductions to 12-1.

VC Bet’s Neal Wilkins commented “Saturday’s Charlie Hall Chase has often proved a terrific trial for the Cheltenham Gold Cup and Ollie Magern can go right to the top judged by his fluent display of fencing on Saturday.

ARSENAL AND MANCHESTER UNITED OFF THE PACE

VC Bet clearly believe that the Premiership title is already over quoting title holders Chelsea at 1/33 to retain their crown next May and their PR Manager also feels that its is the amazing drop in form of challengers Arsenal and Manchester United that has accentuated the runaway success of the west London club.

“The fact that Roman Abramovich has invested over £267 million in the club since taking over at Chelsea in July 2003 should not detract from the fact that both the serious title challengers have failed to reach their normal high standards this season”. commented Wilkins.

He continued “Arsenal have gained just two points from a possible fifteen in their early travels this season and Manchester United have only won once at Old Trafford. Their 4-1 defeat against Middlesbrough was a real setback although they have an immediate chance to stake their claim when facing Chelsea at home next week-end. Both clubs have been beset with injury problems and clearly neither have the strength in depth enjoyed by Chelsea but the apparent loss of form by a number of key players at both clubs has exacerbated the situation”.

ENGLAND v AUSTRIA
Sa Oct 8 – 4:00 pm ko (BBC)

With England at prohibitive odds of 2/9 for a game that they should (must) win, the correct play could be in the goals markets. In the hope that we won’t see Sven experimenting this time, we can expect a few goals from the anticipated Crouch / Owen combo up front (1/2 that they play up front together), which brought Owen a hat-trick against Colombia in the summer. The Austrians are in disarray, with only Azerbaijan and Wales having failed to score against them in qualifying, while even Scotland managed to breach their defence in a recent friendly, so a bet on over 2.5 goals looks best here. At the same time, Michael Owen looks a fair bet at 7/2 to open the scoring, especially considering we’ll give you your money back if he scores the last goals in the game instead. Once the game kicks off, don't forget to check out our 14 live In-Play markets via the new ‘In-Play Console.’

NORTHERN IRELAND v WALES
Live betting - Sa Oct 8 – 3:00 pm ko (BBC1 – NI/ BBC2 – Wales)

Wales are winless in 14 competitive games and will be desperate to get something out of their World Cup campaign. However, they may have to have to wait until their final game against Azerbaijan to restore some Welsh pride, as the Irish look well up to the task. Their recent 1-0 win over England was no fluke, while they deserved their draw in Cardiff too, and this well organised side should be backed at 8/5 to follow up. Live betting available.

SCOTLAND V BELARUS
Sa Oct 8 – 3:00 pm ko (SS1)

With four teams scrapping it out for second spot in the group, this is a must win game for both teams. It’s three points or out, so we’re unlikely to see a repeat of the stalemate between the sides back in June. On their recent form, Scotland are more than entitled to win this but, from a punting perspective, the odds of 8/15 are not great. Instead, we’ll back the value option by playing the correct score market. Scotland’s four home games so far have produced five goals, so we'll split stakes on a 1-0 or 2-0 win, at 5/1 and 11/2 respectively. Bet Live In-Play on this match.

Weekend International Picks:

England v Austria – ‘Over’ 2.5 goals @ 6/5 / Michael Owen to score first @ 7/2 Northern Ireland to beat Wales @ 8/5 Scotland to beat Belarus 1-0 or 2-0 @ 5/1 / 11/2

URSIS THROWN IN AT WEIGHTS

After the excitement of Arc and Cambridgeshire weekend, the jumps season cranks up a gear this weekend with a cracking Chepstow card (live on BBC), where Ursis is fancied to take advantage of a potentially lenient handicap mark (2.25). Winner of two of his four starts in France (close up in the other two), the Jonjo O’Neil-trained gelding made a big impression on his British debut over hurdles, cruising home by 5 lengths at Wetherby.
The bare form of that win doesn’t amount to much but, given his high rating on the flat, he could be ‘thrown in’ at the weights on Saturday. As always, it pays to watch the market, and a move for the Gary Moore-trained Nation State in the same race should be noted. He was one of the better juvenile hurdlers last season, and had a nice pipe-opener on the flat recently, which makes him the main danger to the selection.

FANCY A CLASSIC ENCOUNTER

The best bet on the televised Salisbury card looks to be the speedy Classic Encounter (2.15). He has been lightly raced, having run just three times, but the form of his races has been working out well. On his most recent start in the Norfolk Stakes he split Strike Up The Band and Ajigolo, who have both gone on to Group race success since so, with a little more improvement expected, he can get back in the winner’s circle.

bet365 customers can also watch this race via our new ‘Bet & Watch’ service, which allows you to watch EVERY race in the UK and Ireland live. Just bet £5 with us to take advantage of this service – why bet anywhere else!

IRIS’S A CHANNEL 4 GIFT

Iris’s Gift should be another winner for Jonjo O’Neil in the novice chase at Bangor (4.00), one of the highlights of the Channel 4 televised card. He’s not the betting highlight though, as he’s likely to be at short odds to follow up his recent Market Rasen win. Better odds should be obtained by backing Russian Gigolo, in the handicap chase (3.25). The Nigel Twiston-Davies-trained runner always seems to run well on the course (form figures ‘321’). However, the best bet Channel 4 could be the classy Barry Hills-trained Spinning Queen (York, 2.10), who looks something to bet on now that she’s dropping back to a suitable trip (6f).

With six live races from York and Bangor this Saturday, bet365 customers can take advantage of our fantastic Channel 4 Offer. Back a winner at 4/1, or bigger, and we’ll give you a free bet (up to £50) on the next live Channel 4 race. Many of our customers who were clever enough to back the Cambridgeshire winner, Blue Monday (11/2), did just that last week.

AMEX CHAMPIONSHIP - TOMS A MAJOR BET AT 50/1
Th Oct 6 - 19.00 BST (SS2)
Fr Oct 7 - 19.00 BST (SS2)
Sa Oct 8 - 21.30 BST (SS1)
Su Oct 9 - 18.30 BST (SS1)

Tiger’s record in the AmEx Championship is second to none, reading 1-5-1-1-9 over the last five years, which almost makes him an automatic pick this week. However, he didn’t look at all healthy the last time we saw him in on the golf course and, at just 11/4 in a top-class field, we’ll swerve him for betting purposes this week. Of course, he’s had ten days to get over the rib injury which seemed to cost him victory in his Presidents Cup singles match but, when you also factor in his poor record on par-70 courses, there are just too many doubts to get involved this week. He’ll still have plenty of supporters at 14/5 in the ‘Enhanced Win Only’ market.

Instead, we’ll have a few quid on David Toms at a potentially massive 50/1. That price probably takes into account his recent health scare, which caused him to be carried off the course with chest pains during the Lumber Classic. However, he’s played (well) since, and would only be lining up if he was 100% fit again. With the rough this week having been allowed to grow and the fairways substantially narrowed as a result, his straight driving will be an asset, while he’s also made the frame in two of the last three AmExs. That may be irrelevant on a new course this week, but it at least shows he’s a player who plays well at this time of year. He’s also 16/1 in our ‘Top American Without Woods’ market, where Phil Mickelson is 5/1 favourite.

American golf is on a high right now after their success in the Presidents Cup, but there’ll be plenty of Europeans hoping to spoil the party this week. Padraig Harrington (50/1), whose best 2005 form (two victories) has come in the States, must play well, along with last week’s Dunhill winner Monty (66/1), but Sergio Garcia (22/1) has the best record in this event with four top-tens from five appearances. He’s another player whose accurate driving will stand him in good stead this week, and warmed up nicely for this with a top-15 effort in the Chrysler Classic. Instead of an each way bet we’ll take the 25/1 enhanced win odds, and have a ’saver’ on him at 4/1 in the ‘Top European’ market.

The final pick goes to the massively in-form Olin Browne, at an equally massive bet365 price of 125/1. He may be a first-timer in this event but, with a win and a second in his last four starts (six of his last nine in the top-25), he’s hard to resist at those odds. His familiarity with the PGA Tour should give him an advantage over many international competitors. As with all US Tour events, we’ll have live betting, via our new ‘In-Play Console‘, right up to the final putt on Sunday.

Nigel’s AmEx Championship Three Off The Tee:
Sergio Garcia @ 25/1 (Enhanced Odds); Davis Toms @ 50/1; Olin Browne @ 125/1 (Each-way ¼ odds - 1.2.3.4.5.)

CLASSIC BUBBLE BURST IN ROYAL LODGE STAKES

Sir Michael Stoute’s City of Troy put his reputation on the line in the Royal Lodge Stakes at Newmarket on Sunday and was a very heavily backed favourite from 7-4 down to 11-8 to preserve his unbeaten record.

In a slow run race he never got in a blow at the leaders and finished fourth behind 8-1 chance Leo who completed a wonderful two-year-old double for trainer John Gosden who had won the previous day’s Fillies’ Mile with Nannina.

Leo was subsequently introduced into the 2,000 Guineas market at 33-1 and the favourite George Washington was cliiped from 4-1 to 3-1 with VC Bet who removed City of Troy from their betting for next year’s first classic.

ALL SYSTEMS GO DOWN UNDER

British raider Carte Diamond has made the long and arduous journey from Norton in North Yorkshire to Australia for a double pronged attack on the Aussie’s top races.

Brian Ellison’s four-year-old took the 36 hour journey which involved 25 hours flying time and only lost 10 kilos during the journey.

He is scheduled to run in the one and a half mile Caulfield Cup on Saturday October 15 and will be partnered by top overseas rider Weichong Marwing. Carte Diamond will then attempt to keep the British flag flying down under when taking his chance in the two mile Melbourne Cup on Tuesday November 1.

His owner Ashley Carr commented “Carte Diamond ate seven bowls of feed and drank plenty of water during the long flight from England. He only lost 10 kilos and the vets were perfectly happy with his condition on arrival”.

Carr continued “Brian (Ellison) has been impressed with the way our horse has matured this year and the five-month break between the Triumph Hurdle back in March and his reappearance when second to Sergeant Cecil in the Ebor may have been the making of him. He is still improving and has only raced six times on the flat winner three times, runner-up twice and third once. I am expecting big things of Carte Diamond in the coming weeks”.

Carte Diamond is currently on offer at 25-1 with VC Bet and their PR Manager Neal Wilkins stated “Carte Diamond has exactly the right profile for the Melbourne Cup. He is only four, has low mileage and the right attitude. He could be a force to be reckoned with on November 1 particularly in light of how well he took the travelling”.

World Cup Qualifiers Preview

English and Scottish football fans could be in for a nail-biting few days, as both teams try and book their place in Germany. Tempted to have a punt on this weekend's matches? If so, check out the spread betting markets at bethilo. They're offering £25 cash and a first bet refund to all new clients** (details below), and also allow punters to bet with stakes as small as 1p, an ideal introduction to spread betting. Here are our thoughts on the big games:

England v Austria

Even without Rooney (suspended) and Ashley Cole (injured), England are clear favourites to beat Austria. bethilo are predicting that Sven's team will win by 1.8 to 2.0 goals. The visitors recently scraped draws at home to Scotland and Azerbaijan, and haven't provided much of an attacking threat away from home in Group 6 so far. After their much publicised recent poor performances, England can only improve. Sven is expected to return to a 4-4-2 system, with Gerrard operating at the base of a diamond – a position he excelled in for Liverpool a few seasons ago. With Beckham moved to the right in order to supply Crouch with crosses, and Owen now playing and scoring regularly, nothing less than a convincing win will appease an expectant nation.

N Ireland v Wales

The 2-2 draw between these sides in Cardiff last year was a bad-tempered affair with 3 players sent off. Wales were unlucky to drop points in that match, and although both teams cannot progress from Group 6, pride is at stake at Windsor Park. This should be another close contest, particularly since Wales have a significantly weaker squad to choose from these days. With Bellamy injured, Wales are expected to play with just Hartson up front. So Giggs will need to be on top form if the visitors are to create chances for the big man. With home advantage and their performance against England still fresh in the memory, N Ireland are slight favourites. bethilo are predicting that the home side will edge it by 0.0 to 0.2 goals, and with Healy in fine form another famous victory could be within reach.

Scotland v Belarus

Scotland still have an outside chance of qualifying from Group 5, and should be a better side than the one that drew nil-nil with Belarus in June. Walter Smith's team are unbeaten since that game and go into this match on the back of an impressive victory in Norway. The goal scoring prowess of Miller, along with a much improved team spirit has transformed the Tartan Army's fortunes. Saying that, in Hleb the visitors will have the best player on the park and should not be underestimated. Belarus have only one victory in this group, but they've drawn four of their games and are a tough side to break down. bethilo think Scotland will come out on top by 0.7 to 0.9 goals, and they'll have to be at their best to grab the three points they desperately need.

HORSE RACING

ARC - BACK BAGO FOR REPEAT WIN AT 6/1

Last year’s winner, Bago, looks a cracking each-way bet at 6/1 for this Sunday’s Arc de Triomphe (4.30). Winner of eight of his 13 races (and placed in the other five), he looks particularly well-suited to Longchamp, where he’s won five races from six runs. His only disappointing run from four starts this season was when third to Alkaased (14/1) back in June, but that’s readily excused on account of him suffering from back problems at the time. He’s since shown he’s fully-recovered by running third to Azamour in the King George at Newbury and, as he’s best fresh, will have benefited from being rested since.

As you’d expect, opposition is strong, with the favourite Hurricane Run (11/4) likely to give him most to do. His recent victory in an established Arc Trial was nothing spectacular, but his shrewd trainer is sure to have him spot-on on the day.

Of the others, the filly Shawanda (11/4) has yet to prove herself against the colts, while Derby winner, Motivator (4/1), seems to be getting worse with every run.

Arc Pick: Bago @ 6/1 (Each-way ¼ 1-2-3)

CAMBRIDGESHIRE - HAVE YOU GOT THE BOTTLE AT 20/1…
The result of this Saturday’s Cambridgeshire (Newmarket, 3.55) is harder to predict, but that hasn’t stopped bet365 customers wading into Kew Green at all rates, down to the current 9/1. Winner of four races on the bounce earlier in the year, including an impressive four-length success over last year’s Cambridgeshire, Spanish Don (now 11lb better off), over course and distance in May, he’s sure to run well, especially if the ground is on the soft side. However, whether he’s in the same class as the other winners of this race who have defied more than 9st is doubtful, while, at seven, he would also be the joint-oldest winner of the race in the last 25 years.

Instead, we’ll take a chance on Another Bottle at the current 20/1, trained by Tom Tate. You can ignore this one’s last run at Doncaster earlier this month, as the ground went against him there and he was in need of the run. He’ll be spot on for this and looks sure to run his race, provided it doesn’t come up too soft. If he was trained by one of the more ‘fashionable’ yards he would be half the current price, and looks great each-way value, especially as we’re offering FIVE PLACES on the race! What’s more, back the winner of the race (or any of the other six live Channel 4 races this Saturday) at 4/1, or bigger, and we’ll give you a free bet on the next live Channel 4 race. See site for full details.

bet365 customers can also watch the race via our new ‘Live’ service, which allows you to watch EVERY race in the UK and Ireland. Just bet £5 with us to take advantage of this service – why bet anywhere else!

Cambridgeshire Pick: Another Bottle @ 20/1 (Each-way ¼ 1-2-3-4-5 – ENHANCED
ODDS)

FOOTBALL

LIVERPOOL V CHELSEA - REDS CAN NICK IT AT 7/1

Su Oct 2 – 4:00 pm ko – (SS1)

It’s a busy week at Anfield, with Chelsea visiting in the week and again in the Premiership on Sunday. Both games are likely to be tense affairs, however, based on previous encounters, goals are likely to be at a premium. The pair met five times last season, and every game was close ending either in a draw or with a single goal deciding the outcome. Only the League Cup Final produced more than one goal, so the main bet has to be ‘under’ 2.5 goals at 4/7. Given the current points standings between the two teams, Liverpool might have the greater need to win the game and, with Chelsea finally conceding last weekend, the Reds are fancied to nick this 1-0 at 7/1 (live ‘In-Play’ betting available).

TOON NAILED ON AT 7/5

In other Premiership games this weekend, Newcastle look nailed on to win at a hapless Pompey. It hasn’t taken the Toon long to find their feet since the arrival of , Michael Owen, and the 7/5 just has to be taken. At the same time Owen looks a fair bet at 5/1 to open the scoring, especially considering we’ll give you your money back. if he scores the last goals in the game instead.

GUNNERS 4/5 FOR DOUBLE STRIKE

Arsenal will almost certainly make it 11 home wins in a row when they face Birmingham, although the 1/3 is prohibitive. That will do for our acca, but singles backers will no doubt be more than happy to take the 4/5 on the Arsenal / Arsenal double result instead. The game is live on Sky Sports (Sunday, 1.30 ko), so we’ll have plenty of ‘In-Play’ markets here too.

Also worth backing this weekend are Blackburn (4/5), who finally look like they’re settling down after a topsy-turvy start, and should be able to see off relegation candidates West Brom, and Charlton (6/4). The Addicks kept up their brilliant start at West Brom, and look strong this season, while Spurs have lacked any potency on the road.

A £25 acca on our four fancies this weekend pays out £378.00, which includes a bet365 bonus of 5%.

Weekend Premiership Picks:

Liverpool v Chelsea – ‘Under’ 2.5 goals @ 4/7
Liverpool to win 1-0 @ 7/1
Newcastle to beat Portsmouth @ 7/5;
Michael Owen to score first @ 5/1
Arsenal / Arsenal @ 4/5
Blackburn to beat West Brom @ 4/5
Charlton to beat Tottenham @ 6/4
4-fold on Arsenal, Newcastle, Blackburn, Charlton
