AS YOU WERE IN PREMIERSHIP

Last week-end’s Premiership matches provided no shocks at the head of the table with the big guns all winning and justifying odds on favouritism in their matches.

Arsenal (1-3 with VC Bet) set the ball rolling with a 3-0 destruction of Blackburn at Highbury and Chelsea (30-100 with VC Bet) strolled to a 2-0 win over Portsmouth at Fratton Park.

Manchester United (4-6 with VC Bet) overcome a first minute shock to run out convincing 2-1 winners over West Ham at Upton Park and the top of the Premiership table has a familiar look about it.

Neal Wilkins of VC Bet commented “After the wonderful early exploits of Wigan it looks like business as usual with the leading contenders in the Premiership and Chelsea are obviously long-odds on with their depth of squad and ten point lead".

Arcalis Stakes His Claim

Howard Johnson’s Arcalis leapt to the front of the market for the Champion Hurdle when annihilating his rivals in the Fighting Fifth Hurdle at Newcastle and was slashed from 12-1 to 6-1 joint second favourite with VC Bet for the Champion Hurdle.

Neal Wilkins of VC Bet commented “Considering the doubts expressed by his connections over their concerns with the soft ground this was a top-class performance by a young horse who is clearly going the right way”.

DARKNESS PREVAILS AT NEWBURY

Charlie Egerton’s impressive Newbury scorer Darkness was slashed from 33-1 to 16-1 with VC Bet for the Royal & SunAlliance Chase. He looks a horse with a future and came from a long way back to overhaul the disappointing odds-on favourite Iris’s Gift.

NO GIFT FOR PUNTERS

Iris’s Gift was a very disappointing odds-on favourite for punters at Newbury when he only just held on to second place in the novices’ chase after making much of the running. He was removed from the Cheltenham Gold Cup betting by VC Bet who had previously offered Jonjo O’Neill’s horse at 10-1.

Neal Wilkins of VC Bet commented “Iris’s Gift made a number of jumping errors and will clearly need to improve that part of his game if he is going to compete at the highest level. On the face of it this was a very disappointing performance particularly for favourite backers”.

Cricket - Pakistan v England 3rd Test

Although England can't win the series against Pakistan in Lahore, there's still plenty to play for at the Gadaffi Stadium. If you're thinking about having a punt on the final Test, it's well worth taking a look at the spread betting markets on offer from Sporting Index. They're offering all new clients £100 cash** as well as a refund on your first losing bet** (details below). To get you thinking, here are our thoughts on the third Test:

The difference in the condition of the pitch between the third and fourth innings probably saved England from defeat at Faisalabad., It's fair to say that winning the toss at Lahore is again going to be a key factor if England are to avoid a series defeat. The main difference between the two sides so far has been the quality of spin bowling on display. Giles and Udal have taken just 5 wickets, compared to the 10 taken by Kaneria, Malik and Afridi.

Improved batting performances from Jones, Pietersen and Flintoff were an encouraging sign for the visitors, and it's reasonable to expect a decent return from Vaughan in the final Test. However, they'll all have to be at their best at Lahore, where Pakistan have a strong record in recent years. The hosts have won their last three Tests at this ground, beating New Zealand, South Africa and India. Ul Haq has averaged 92 runs in his last 5 Tests at the Gadaffi Stadium, scoring 118 runs last time out. Sporting Index are predicting that the Pakistani skipper will score 88 to 95 runs in the final Test, and Giles will have to improve his delivery if Ul Haq is to be prevented from racking up another century at this ground.

Free GBP100 Cash for New Clients**

If you haven't got a Sporting Index account yet, it's a good time to take advantage of the £100 cash on offer: Open a Sporting Index account* and place five sports bets, where each bet could win or lose you £20, and you can claim a free £100 straight into your account**.

First Bet Refund**

That's not all, Sporting Index will also refund your losses (up to £50) if your first bet is a loser!**

*Credit and suitability checks, **terms and conditions apply. See site for further details about an account with Sporting Index. Sports spread betting involves a high level of risk and you can lose more than your original stake. It is not suitable for everyone so please ensure that you understand the risks involved and only bet with money you can afford to lose.

Two Pakistan v England Promotions for All Clients**

Sporting Index is running two promotions on every Test in the series, and you don't have to stay up until 4.30am to take advantage:

1) Buy (bet 'high' on) a batsman's Total Test Runs, and they'll add 10 runs onto his final total if he is the highest scorer of the match.**

2) Buy (bet 'high' on) a batsman's Innings Runs at any time, and if he's run out, they'll refund your losses.**

Premiership Preview

There are three decent games on the box this weekend, including a tricky return to Upton Park for an under-fire Man Utd side. If you're thinking about having a punt on any of this weekend's fixtures it's well worth having a look at the spread betting markets from Sporting Index. They're offering all new clients a free £150 per goal football bet**, and a refund of up to £50 if your first bet is a loser**:

Portsmouth v Chelsea

Not surprisingly, manager-less Pompey are massive underdogs. Caretaker Joe Jordan had a poor record as Harry Redknapp's temporary replacement and with a weaker squad to work with this time, a result against the champions is surely too much to ask. Sporting Index is predicting that visitors Chelsea will win this one by 1.5 to 1.7 goals. The Blues were impressive against Anderlecht in midweek, with Essien and Crespo ensuring that Makelele and Drogba are hardly missed. Pompey have just one striker available for this game and it wouldn't be a surprise if goalkeeper Ashdown sees a lot more of the ball than Lua Lua.

Everton v Newcastle

Everton were very poor at WBA last weekend, a place where visitors Newcastle won comfortably a couple of weeks ago. With Tim Cahill doubtful, it's difficult to see where the Toffees are going to get goals from, even against the Magpies' shaky defence. For Newcastle, Luque should be fit again, which will be a major boost for Souness after his side's heaviest defeat of the season at Chelsea. Sporting Index think there will be a total of 2.2 to 2.4 goals in this game, and with Everton short of goals and Newcastle possibly without Shearer and Owen, a low scoring draw could be on the cards at Goodison.

West Ham v Man Utd

Gary Neville's return to fitness is a timely boost for rudderless United. They struggled against a weakened Villareal in midweek, and a trip to in-form West Ham should provide the Red Devils with a real test. Sporting Index has made United favourites, predicting a 0.6 to 0.8 goal victory for Ferguson's side. The key to success for the visitors will be the form of Rooney and Ronaldo, if both are not at their best United could struggle to create chances. West Ham impressed against Spurs last weekend, with Reo-Coker's replacement, Noble, playing well. In previous seasons one would suspect that the Hammers midfield would get overrun, but a Keane-less United aren't a terrifying prospect. United old boy Sheringham may still have enough class to help the Hammers grab a point.

Hennessy Gold Cup Preview

All eyes will be on Newbury this Saturday, for the Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup. Tempted to have a punt? If so, check out the spread betting markets from Sporting Index. They're currently offering all new clients £100 after just 5 bets** and a refund on your first losing bet**:

Sporting Index allow punters to back horses to perform well or badly, so you could be celebrating on Saturday night no matter who ends up winning the race. Here are our thoughts on this year's front runners:

Trab Fab

Trabolgan has been backed as if defeat is out of the question this week, and he's firm favourite with the majority of bookies. Trained by the talented Nicky Henderson, this improving sort impressed as winner of the Sun Alliance Chase at the Cheltenham Festival. However, he could still carry top weight and has a hefty rating for a second season chaser. L'Ami comes across the Channel to pot hunt for regular visitor Francois Doumen. His runners always command the utmost respect and this charge has a 7lb pull following a six length beating by Trabolgan at the Festival.

Paul Nicholls' gelding, Cornish Rebel, made steady progress over fences last season, culminating in a narrow defeat in the Scottish National. He should appreciate the conditions of Saturday's race and has plenty of things in his favour, notably the assistance of Ruby Walsh. A full brother to the ill fated Best Mate, he is also proven in a big field and can boast an unbeaten record at Newbury.

Comply or Die looked a very decent novice last season for the all conquering Martin Pipe yard, and was three lengths behind Trabolgan at Cheltenham. He then disappointed in the Scottish National and the Betfred Gold Cup in April. He was probably past his best by then, and with a summer break under his belt, he could have every chance if returning to his best form. He has a 5lb pull, the same weight as Trabolgan.

Distant Thunder comes from a yard that was successful with Kingscliff at Haydock last Saturday, and this course winner last February could be very well handicapped. He kept good company last year, and rounded off his campaign with two impressive victories before injury halted his Cheltenham preparation. A recent Wincanton outing should have put him spot on for this, and he could be a decent each way selection.

DEVIL IN DEMAND WITH VC BET

VC Bet report very good support for Paul Nicholls’ Red Devil Robert from 10-1 into 8-1 for Saturday’s Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup at Newbury.

Neal Wilkins from VC Bet commented “Paul Nicholls has three runners entered at the five-day stage and most people have assumed that Ruby Walsh will be sticking with Cornish Rebel. However we have seen significant backing for Red Devil Robert who looked a non-stayer last time behind Iris Bleu at Cheltenham and is now running over a longer trip”.

AS YOU WERE IN PREMIERSHIP

With all three leading contenders proving successful over the week-end VC Bet have retained Chelsea at 1/14 for the Premiership title with Manchester United at 9/1 and Arsenal, who gained their first away win of the season at Wigan, at 12/1.

VC Bet’s Nick Blezard commented “It was a case of as you were after the resumption of Premiership fixtures following the break for international matches. Arsenal brought Wigan’s winning sequence to an end and Chelsea resumed winning ways after a very dubious penalty decision went against Newcastle with Terry’s challenge on Bowyer. United looked more of a force than late in their fixture against Charlton and it is status quo as far as we are concerned after this week-end’s matches”.

BERRY IMPRESSIVE ON CHASING DEBUT

Howard Johnson’s Bewleys Berry was a very impressive scorer on his chasing debut at Wetherby and was cut from 16-1 to 10-1 for the Royal & SunAlliance Chase at Cheltenham with VC Bet.

VC Bet’s Neal Wilkins commented “Bewleys Berry’s future was always going to be over fences based on his success in Irish point to points. Although he proved somewhat disappointing in his final two runs over hurdles when highly tried last season there is no reason why he should not figure among the leading novices this season.”

KING HENRY BACK ON THE THRONE

Arsenal’s ace goal scorer Thierry Henry who was out 9-2 to retain his Golden Boot with VC Bet after suffering an injury which meant that he missed a string of games early in the season is back to 15-8 second favourite on the back of another two goals in his latest game against Wigan.

VC Bet’s Neal Wilkins commented “Henry proved yet again at the week-end that he is a class act and if he remains injury free for the rest of the season he will clearly be a huge threat to Van Nistelrooy for the Golden Boot”.

Barcelona still head the market for the Champions League with VC Bet after the latest round of matches in the Group stage. The joint leaders in the Spanish Liga are 4-1 favourites on the back of their latest 3-1 win over Werder Bremen and have comfortably qualified in Group C.

Neal Wilkins from VC Bet commented “Barcelona appeared to take their foot off the gas in their goalless away draw at Panathinaikos but have qualified for the knock-out stage with ease and will take all the beating.”

Basketball Bounce!!

I LOVE THIS GAME! Yes, the NBA season is underway! After its season opener three weeks ago, the drama could not be more compelling! From early injuries (Miami's "Shaq Diesel" down with an ankle sprain) to game winning shots (Detroit guard Rip Hamilton's game winner versus the Celtics), this season is turning out to be a classic for the books.

College hoop action is also on the move as well! Will the North Carolina Tar Heels defend their title this year? Or, will their in-state rival, the Duke Blue Devils - led by JJ Redick and Shelden Williams - try to recapture their glory of 2001?

NO REFUGE STAKES HIS CLAIM

Windsor winner No Refuge has been cut from 8-1 to 6-1 with VC Bet for the Ladbrokes World Hurdle and is now clear second favourite for the three-mile race. Despite looking in serious trouble turning for home he showed battling qualities to overhaul the Tony McCoy ridden Blue Canyon and draw away on the run-in.

VC Bet's Neal Wilkins commented "It would appear the further he goes the better No Refuge gets and even at this early stage of the National Hunt season he looks like being a real threat to stable companion Inglis Drever".

LEADER LOOKS A FAIR BET AT 10/1

Kicking King makes an earlier-than-usual appearance to these shores when he lines up for the Betfair Chase on Saturday (Haydock, 2.20), and he looks to have scared off the majority of the opposition. With a maximum of nine rivals to take him on, the Gold Cup winner is currently trading at Evens, which is a just reflection of his chances considering he’s likely to step up considerably on his debut second when lack of fitness told in the closing stages. However, there is just a nagging feeling that he was flattered by his wins in the King George and at Cheltenham last season, where the majority of his rivals failed to either stay or run up to form and, at the price, he’s worth opposing on Saturday.

The most obvious one to take him on with is Ollie Magern (4/1), who put up a bold display of jumping when winning the bet365 Charlie Hall Chase last time out. This race will be a different test for him, however, especially if he races as keenly as last time, and that could set the race up for Jonjo O’Neil’s Keen Leader, who looks a cracking price at 10/1, providing he can jump around (fell in the Charlie Hall). We’ve already had our fingers burnt backing him this season, but the stable is in such good form, that he has to be given another chance on a course where he’s scored two of his wins. Be warned, if you back him, you’ll have your heart in your mouth at every fence. If you can bare to watch but can’t get to a TV, you can always watch the race live here at bet365. Just bet £5 and click on the live stream next to the race.

Last week we cashed in by backing England to beat Argentina, and we’ll stick with the ‘home’ team again for this week’s Algarve World Cup golf, in the shape of David Howell and Luke Donald. The 3/1 doesn’t look to be giving much away, but they’re by far the most talented duo on display this week and this is not a tournament for shocks because favourites or second favourites have won three of the last five contests. And Donald will know what it takes to win here, having partnered Paul Casey to victory last year (over Spain), while his partner Howell could not be in better form having edged out Tiger in China last week.

Quality opposition looks thin on the ground, with the US (and to a lesser extent South Africa) fielding second-rate teams, so the main threat could again come from the Spanish duo of Garcia and Jimenez. However, neither player are putting that well right now so, if there is going to be turn up, it could come from the new Argentinean pairing of Richard Gonzalez and Angel Cabrera, who look a nice each-way bet at 16/1 (1/5 odds, 1.2.3.4). The proceedings get under way early on Thursday morning, but don’t worry if you miss the start as you can always get on via our live In-Play service.

Algarve World Cup Pick: England @ 3/1; Argentina (Each-way) @ 16/1

FOOTBALL REVIEW

LAST WEEK’S PICKS - ENGLAND (7/4), SWITZERLAND (13/10) & CZECH REPUBLIC
(7/5) ALL WON!

ENGLAND NOW 7/1 FOR WORLD CUP GLORY

England staged a remarkable comeback to clinch a thrilling 3-2 victory over Argentina last weekend to earn a cut in the World Cup odds from 8/1 to 7/1. The result wasn’t unexpected, and the Three Lions were well-backed (and tipped up) at 7/4, but what was more surprising was the fact that we got to see a competitive friendly and, as a result, there was plenty of betting action via bet365’s live ‘In-Play Console’. With only three minutes to go, England were trading at 25/1 (Argentina 1/20), while they were also a very backable 14/1 after Argentina had gone 1-0 up after 34 minutes.

However, it’s easy to get carried away with this result, which means nothing in terms of the World Cup, and if a further reality check were needed, Brazil were showing why they’re 3/1 favourites with an 8-0 thrashing of UAE. If England are to go all the way, they’ll need the defending champions to have an off-day or two, which is always possible given the unpredictable nature of knockout football. A few more goals from Saturday’s hero, Michael Owen would help too, and he’s 15/8 with bet365 to be top England scorer (Rooney 4/1).

However, England and Brazil were not the only market movers at the weekend, with Italy cut into 10/1 from 11/1 after their 3-1 victory over Holland. The Dutch were missing a few players, but this was still an impressive performance from Italy’s new-look forward partnership of Luca Toni and Alberto Gilardino. There were also play-off victories for Spain, who were chopped into 16/1 from 20/1, and the Czech Republic (20/1 from 33/1). However, anyone looking for a long-shot at this stage might want to consider Serbia at 66/1. The Serbs finished above Spain in qualifying, conceding just one goal in the process, and they may be able to do a Greece!

Ante Post Pick: Serbia & Montenegro @ 66/1

LATICS ARE VALUE AT 10/3
Sa Nov 19 – 12.45 ko (SS1)

Back in the Premiership, Wigan’s success story has been one of the stories of the season, and a very profitable one for ‘in the game’ readers who’ve latched on. However, Saturday’s visit by Arsenal will be one of their toughest tests so far, and many will be expecting their golden run of six straight wins to come to an end. After a difficult start, Arsene Wenger’s side are beginning to find the net regularly, winning eight of their last nine in all competitions, but they’re priced accordingly at 4/5. As a consequence, Paul Jewell’s side are probably a shade too big at 7/2, and are worth a small bet at that price, but more significant support getting a half-goal start on the Asian handicap (currently 2.05). Obviously, the Gunners will be a different proposition to the likes of Portsmouth and Fulham, but the Latics are on a roll and weren’t disgraced against Chelsea on the opening day of the season. Three months on, they haven’t lost since, having conceded just three times in the last eleven (none in the last five), and scoring at least once every time. Once the game goes live, don’t forget to check out our 14 exciting live ‘In-Play’ markets.

Live Game Pick:Wigan @ 7/2

Whether we’ve got the confidence to put Wigan in our Premiership acca is another thing, the cornerstone of which has to be Chelsea at home to Newcastle. After two defeats on the bounce against Real Betis and Man Utd, Chelsea should be fired up for this, and Newcastle, who were lucky to overcome Birmingham 1-0 at St James’, could be on the wrong end of a thrashing (Chelsea to win 3-0, 8/1).

Liverpool have bounced back from their Carling Cup defeat by Palace, and the 2-0 win at Aston Villa suggests that they’ll have no trouble seeing off Portsmouth, who’ve won just four games in 20 matches under manager Alain Perrin (8/11 in our ‘Sack Race’ betting). With little confidence in our odds-on quotes for both Man United and Middlesbrough, our weekend acca is completed by Bolton (7/4) and Tottenham (4/6).

A £25 acca on our four fancied team pays out £228.74, which includes a bet365 bonus of 5% (up to 60% available every weekend).

Suggested Premiership Acca:

Chelsea, Liverpool, Bolton, Tottenham – pays £228.74 (£25 stake)

Premiership Preview

Arsene Wenger thinks the title race is back on after Chelsea's defeat at Old Trafford. Arsenal will have to beat Wigan on Saturday if they're to have any chance of catching the Blues. Can they do it? If you're thinking about having a punt on this game, check out the spread betting markets at bethilo. They're offering new clients £25 cash** and a refund on your first losing bet** (details below). Here are our thoughts on all of this weekend's televised Premiership matches to help you get started:

Wigan v Arsenal

This is Arsenal's first away fixture in the Premiership since the shock defeat at WBA over a month ago. Wigan are undefeated at home since their opening day loss to Chelsea, and should provide the Gunners with a real test. bethilo are predicting that the visitors will edge this one by 0.6 to 0.8 goals. Results at the JJB this season suggest it will be a low scoring affair, but Van Persie is on fire for the Gunners and his pace will be a problem for De Zeeuw and Henchoz. Arsenal will be without a recognised left-back and it will be interesting to see whether the Latics can use this to their advantage. They'll need Bullard to continue his early season form on the right side of midfield, if they are to get something from this game.

WBA v Everton

Everton grabbed a vital win at Birmingham in their last away match, but the Baggies should be a tougher proposition. The home side were a little unlucky to lose 3-0 at the Hawthorns to Newcastle and are a better side than that score line suggests. Kuszczak looks like an adequate replacement for Kirkland, and they should be stronger in attack with Ellington fully fit. Everton look to have turned a corner in recent weeks, and their improving form is linked to the return to fitness of Beattie and Van Der Meyde. However, Aussie Cahill is unlikely to feature and that is a blow to a side struggling to score goals. bethilo reckon that the Baggies will come out on top by 0.0 to 0.2 goals, and it looks like being a close, scrappy affair.

Middlesbrough v Fulham

Fulham are in decent form, inspired by the return to form of Malbranque. However they will be without Boa Morte, who will certainly be missed. Boro's last home game was the 4-1 thrashing of Man Utd, and they should be confident of grabbing all three points again on Sunday. Schwarzer and Viduka are likely to be absent, but with Yakubu and Hasselbaink in good form they should have too much quality for the Cottagers. bethilo are predicting a home victory, with Boro priced up to win by 0.6 to 0.8 goals.

LINGO IMPRESSES AFTER LAY-OFF

JP McManus’ Lingo who had been off the course for 680 days after landing the 2004 Tolworth Hurdle shot into contention for the Champion Hurdle following his 3 1/2 length victory in Cheltenham’s Greatwood Handicap Hurdle. Gambled on from 8-1 down to 5-1 and attracting a single wager of £650,000 to £100,000 each way, Lingo was always travelling well under Tony McCoy and came clear after jumping the last to take the best part of a million pounds out of the ring.

In doing so he leapt To the fore-front of the market for the Champion Hurdle and was slashed from 33-1 down to 10-1 fourth favourite with VC Bet. Neal Wilkins from VC Bet commented “Lingo is very lightly raced because of his long absence and he showed that he possesses the right mixture of speed and stamina. He would not be the first massive improver to win a Champion Hurdle – Make a Stand comes quickly to mind”.

TRABOLGAN HEADS THE MARKET

Nick Henderson’s Trabolgan who was available at 14-1 last week-end has come in for further support and is now clear favourite for the Hennessy with VC Bet having been backed from 6-1 today. Trabolgan, who has displaced Our Vic as favourite, won two of his four races over fences last season including the Royal & SunAlliance Chase at Cheltenham.

VC Bet’s Neal Wilkins commented “There was a big move for Trabolgan last week at 14-1 on the back of the defection of stable companion Juveigneur and this continued support from the “right faces” suggests the horse will be making a bold showing on his seasonal reappearance in the Hennessy”.

CHAMPION HURDLE CONTENDERS OUT ON SATURDAY

Champion Hurdle Aspirants putReputations on Line

Last season’s top juvenile hurdlers Penzance and Faasel are among the five-day entries for Saturday’s Casino 36 Classic Nerak Hurdle at Haydock. They were first and second respectively in the Triumph Hurdle and have both been backed from 20-1 into 14-1 with VC Bet in the last week.

VC Bet’s Neal Wilkins commented “A bold display this Saturday from either of the protagonists would force them right into the forefront of the betting for the Champion Hurdle. ENGLAND EXPECTS

England’s dramatic 3-2 win over Argentina in Geneva was the launching pad for a flood of patriotic support which has seen them cut from 7-1 to 6-1 second favourites with VC Bet. They are now favoured in the betting to the host nation Germany and Saturday’s South American rivals.

VC Bet’s Rob Walker commented “There is a huge feeling of expectancy about England’s World Cup chance and a genuine belief from punters that we actually have a team that could go all the way barring injuries and suspensions”.

OUR VIC TOPS WITH VC BET

Martin Pipe’s Our Vic shot to the head of the market for the Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup after his gutsy win in the Paddy Power Gold Cup at Cheltenham last week and has been cut from 12-1 to 5-1 with VC Bet.

A 6lb penalty for that success brings his weight up to 11st 4lbs and he clearly holds a favourite’s chance in the Newbury spectacular on November 26.

VC Bet’s Neal Wilkins commented “Saturday’s victory was a fantastic training achievement by Martin Pipe bringing the horse back to win after his problems last season. Our Vic clearly proved that he has got his confidence back and off his present handicap mark he will surely be making up for lost time”.

England are up against one of the favourites for the 2006 World Cup on neutral territory this weekend. Tempted to have a punt on the game? Read on for our thoughts, to help you get started:

Argentina v England

Both sides have shown indifferent form of late, and are expected to name full strength teams as the World Cup draws ever closer. Argentina lost their last World Cup Qualifier to Uruguay with a second string team, and Jose Peckerman is keen to give his Europe based players a full run out in Geneva. bethilo is predicting that the South Americans will edge this one by 0.1 to 0.3 goals.

In Riquelme and Messi they have two of the most creative players in the world, and England’s defence could struggle to contain them, particularly without a first choice right or left back. King may well be deployed as the holding midfielder in an attempt to protect the back four. Argentina are a difficult team to break down, benefiting from the vast experience of Sorin, Ayala and Zanetti. However their ageing back line now lack pace, so they could be susceptible to the pace of Owen and Rooney.

If you’re looking to bet on a bit of Argy-bargy, bethilo are predicting less than 3 yellow cards on their bookings market. Given the history and pre-match banter, you could bet high on bookings and cash in if the game gets messy.

Pakistan v England 1st Test

Can England continue their impressive Ashes form against Pakistan? If you're thinking about having a punt on the series, it's well worth taking a look at the spread betting markets at Sporting Index. They're offering all new clients £100 cash** as well as a refund on your first losing bet** (details below). To get you thinking, here are our thoughts on the first Test:

Multan of Swing

England's disappointing performances in the run up to the first Test should be largely disregarded, because the pitch at Multan plays very differently to the grassy wickets used for the warm up games. With an average of just three runs per over expected, England's batsmen (Pietersen and Flintoff) in particular will have to show more discipline at the crease than they did during the Ashes. Sporting Index are predicting 205 to 220 runs for Pietersen during this series, and it's worth remembering that during the last tour of Pakistan, only Hussain, Hick and Stewart scored more than 100 series runs.

With a higher quality of pace bowler to choose from, England could have a slight edge during the first innings of the each Test. However, Danish Kaneria and Pakistan's other spin bowlers should redress the balance during the second innings. England will need Giles in top form if they are to be a serious threat. He took 19 wickets during the last tour of Pakistan, and should be England's danger man again. With heavy dew on the pitch until late morning, and early sunsets expected in Northern Pakistan, both teams could struggle to reach 80 overs per day. Sporting Index have made neither side favourite going into the first Test, so a draw could be the most likely result.

Free £100 Cash for New Clients**

If you haven't got a Sporting Index account yet, it's a good time to take advantage of the £100 cash on offer:

Open a Sporting Index account* and place five sports bets, where each bet could win or lose you £20, and you can claim a free £100 straight into your account**.
