Waiver Wire Work

Now that most of Week 1 is behind us, let’s take a look at the players you need to target on your waiver wire. This is usually the most active week on the wire as people try to grab those hot starters, so make sure you get your claims in before your league deadline. I’ll run through each game and tell you which players you should pick up that are most likely available on your free agency list.

Miami-Pittsburgh
QB – If Ben Roethlisberger’s injury takes longer to heal than what they are currently saying, then it looks like Charlie Batch will be an adequate replacement.
RB – Both starting backs (Willie Parker/Ronnie Brown) are solid, so nothing to report here.
WR/TE -- Miami’s best WR, Chris Chambers, was only the third-leading receiver on his team in this game. Both Wes Welker, with 67 yards, and Marty Booker, with 64, were ahead of Chambers’ 59. It remains to be seen which of these two will become the No. 2 guy, but if your league counts return yards, then Welker looks like a solid pickup, as he had 153 yards in punt and kickoff returns. Pittsburgh’s solid TE, Heath Miller is probably not on your wire, but if he is snap him up immediately. He went for 101 yards, of which 87 came on a long TD pass from Batch. It looks like Nate Washington might be taking over the second WR role in Pittsburgh so if you’re in a very deep league then he might be worth a risk.

Cincinnati-Kansas City
QB – With the devastating hit Trent Green took that knocked him out, it looks like Damon Huard will be the K.C. QB for a while. Huard did pretty well and might be a decent fill-in for the Chiefs. Depending on the depth of your league and if Green is your starter, go ahead and target Huard. Carson Palmer really wasn’t needed too much in this game as the running game and defense took care of business.
RB – Both of the Johnsons (Larry and Rudi) looked fine. LJ made up for his lack of rushing yards (68) with 5 catches for 80 yards.
WR/TE – Not much action on the Bengals’ side. Chad Johnson was the main target, as usual, and with T.J. Houshmandzadeh being made inactive for this one, no one else really stepped up to claim a spot. K.C.’s receiving game was dominated by Tony Gonzalez, who had 10 catches for 81 yards and the Chiefs' only TD. None of the K.C. Pelton Pays Off

The 2006 Legends of Poker World Poker Tour Championships have just ended, and a relatively unknown player, Joe Pelton, took the title and a cool $1.5 million. Joe battled through possibly the toughest final 50 players of any WPT event. The final 50 was a who’s who of poker, and on first glance it seemed unlikely anyone but a top pro would win --- but Joe proved that to be a total misconception.

Heading into the final 50 were such players as Tuan Lee (three-time WPT champion), James Van Alstyne (WPT champion), Huck Seed (WSOP champion), Hoyt Corkins (WPT champion), Scotty Nguyen (WPT Champion), John Juanda, Tim Phan, Barry Shulman ... and the list goes on. The fish were literally swimming with the sharks in contention for the title. But considering luck plays such a large part in poker, it could still be anyone’s game ... with a little luck and some moderate skill an amateur could come out on top, and against the odds that’s just what happened.

Speaking of odds, throughout the tournament there were daily updated odds available on all remaining players. If the Chiefs believe in themselves, they could win 14 games; if they question themselves, they could win 8.

Denver Broncos +$110/10 wins: The Broncos are in a weird position in QB Jake Plummer being the clear leader of this team, but rookie QB Jay Cutler clearly being the future. If Plummer struggles early, look for a quick switch to be made. Letting Ashley Lelie go may have been a mistake, but the Broncos can find RBs on Pluto, so maybe that will rub off on the WR department. The defense has its holes, but is a solid unit. Denver should challenge for the AFC West title as well as the Super Bowl title.

San Diego Chargers +$200/9.5 wins: The Philip Rivers era begins with a ... whimper? Many questions will be answered early on about the Bolts' future at QB, but what doesn’t need to be answered is L.T. running the ball all over the place. TE Antonio Gates is a bona-fide superstar, and Coach Marty Schottenheimer will need all the pieces to fall in the right place or this will be the end of the road for one of the better coaches of this era not to win a Super Bowl. Bill Cowher finally did it last year; is this the year of Marty?

DTM PREDICTED WINS: 9

Oakland Raiders +$1100/6 wins: The Raiders will be better than last year, but that’s not saying much. New QB Aaron Brooks already has more of a rhythm with Randy Moss than Kerry Collins could have dreamed of, and big man Art Shell is back on the sideline after a lengthy absence. It will take a couple of years to right the ship, but with Shell manning it, the future finally is bright for the Silver and Black ... just not this season.
