Will Those Kentucky Derby Jinxes Hold True in 2007
But the quartet shares another common thread ? the start or perpetuation of jinxes that have held true for decades.
The oldest Curse of Churchill Downs dates back to 1882 when Apollo roared down the stretch to capture the eighth Derby. He was the last winner that didn?t run as a 2-year-old.
That's the century-plus jinx Curlin must overcome. The son of Smart Sense scored the most impressive victory of the half-dozen major preps when he captured the 71st Arkansas Derby by a record 10.5 lengths at Oaklawn Park. But there are other jinxes he must put to rest.
Then there are 2-year-olds champions that had high hopes for a successful trip to Louisville after winning the Breeders' Cup Juvenile. Some didn't compete because of injuries, but those that did failed during all 21 years.
That jinx goes back even further: No juvenile champion since Spectacular Bid in '79 has accomplished the feat. That was during a glorious decade of horse racing when a half-dozen winners of the Eclipse Award for 2-year-olds captured The Derby. Three of those took the Triple Crown: Affirmed, '78; Seattle Slew, '77; and Secretariat, '73.
Regret won the 41st Derby going wire-to-wire. The first filly to smell the roses in 1915 had only three career starts. No other horse, colt or gelding has performed the feat.Enter Curlin again. He did average 9.5 lengths in three career victories. But can he overcome such historic odds even though he was the 7-2 favorite in Pool 3 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager.
Exterminator took the 44th Derby with only four races behind him. No other horse since 1918 has managed to duplicate that achievement.
In the same boat are Tiago, surprise winner of the 70th Santa Anita Derby, and Deadly Dealer, third in the 83rd Blue Grass.
Another jinx dates back to '83 when Sunny's Halo captured the 109th Derby. He was the last horse with only two preps to do so. In fact, he broke the same jinx that had withstood the test time since '47 when Jet Pilot triumphed.
There are a slew of horses with only two preps: Blue Grass winner Domincan, Street Sense, Circular Quay, Great Hunter, Deadly Dealer and, of course, Curlin.Another jinx was broken last year when Barbaro won at Churchill Downs after resting five weeks following his Florida Derby victory. The son of Dynaformer was only the second horse to take that much time off after Needles followed the same route in '56.
2007 Horses in the same boat: Circular Quay, winner of the Louisiana Derby; off eight weeks; Hard Spun, victorious in the Lane?s End, off six weeks; and Scat Daddy, first in the Florida Derby ahead of Chelokee, third, and Stormello, off five weeks. You have time to figure out if any jinx will bite the dust.

2007 French Open Tennis Tournament
On the men's side it?s all about Rafael Nadal. The Spanish sensation has won the French the last two years, including a classic final versus Roger Federer last season. The Swiss Master, Federer will head to Paris still looking for this first French Open title to complete the career Grand Slam.
Federer is following in the footsteps of past greats like Boris Becker and Pete Sampras, who conquered every challenge the tennis game world threw at them except the red clay of Roland Garros. The last man not named Nadal to win the French was Gaston Gaudio back in 2003. Gaudio was bounced in the fourth round over the last two years at Roland Garros, but is still a threat to win any title on clay. Nadal is definitely the clear favorite, but this is the French Open and there's always a chance of the next Gustavo Kuerten making a name for himself by winning the French.
The woman's tennis tour may not have a Roger Federer that wins almost every tournament, but that's not exactly the case when it comes to the French Open. In Paris the woman everyone will be watching is Justine Henin-Hardenne. The Belgian starlet has won the last two French Open tournaments and also took home the title in 2003. Henin-Hardenne could have also won the title in 2004 if not for an illness that sapped all her energy during most of the season. The winner that year was Anastasia Myskina, but she hasn?t appeared in a Grand Slam final since and would need a miracle to change that in Paris.
Last year Henin-Hardenne defeated Svetlana Kuznetsova in the final. That was Kuznetsova's first Grand Slam final since winning the U.S. Open in 2004 and she's still looking for her first title this season. A win at the French for her would be a surprise. Speaking of surprises, keep an eye on tennis player Serena Williams. The younger of the Williams sisters was a French Open champion back in 2002, but what makes her a real contender is her shocking win in the Australian Open earlier this year. Williams entered that tournament unseeded, but she won?t be able to surprise anyone in Paris.

The 2007 Masters Golf Tournament in Review
The continuing domination by Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson of The Masters was terminated last weekend. All it took was a relative unknown Iowan named Zach Johnson.
A week ago Johnson was just that guy who played golf pretty well as a member of his first Ryder Cup team a year ago. Now he’s the guy who beat Tiger, Phil and Vijay at their own game, on PGA golf’s biggest stage.
Zach Johnson became the only guy not named Woods, Mickelson or Mike Weir to shoulder the Green Jacket since 2001. He did it by outplaying everyone that had a chance to catch him, shooting a three-under par 69 on the final day at Augusta National. Tiger made his usual play for the title on the final round, but even an eagle on 13 couldn’t make up for a bogey on 10 and par golf from 14 to the final hole. Tiger had to settle for a second-place tie with Rory Sabbatini and Retief Goosen at three-over par.
That’s still much better than Mickelson. Lefty was attempting to defend his 2006 Masters title, but never got close after shooting four-over 76 in the first round. Mickelson finished the tournament in a three-way tie for 24th at 11-over par.
The biggest disappointment of the tournament had to be absorbed by Brett Wetterich. Wetterich was in the same shoes as Johnson, looking for his first major victory. He was co-leader following the second round after shooting an opening-round 69 and a 73 on Friday. Wetterich’s lead and chances of putting on the Green Jacket evaporated quickly on Saturday, after he imploded and shot an 11-over par 83. Wetterich ended up in a six-way tie for 37th place at +14.
Other so-called Masters favorites that couldn’t get it done at Augusta included Stuart Appleby (+5), Jim Furyk (+8), Tim Clark (+8), Adam Scott (+12), Sergio Garcia (missed cut) and Ernie Els (missed cut).
From a betting standpoint The 2007 Masters was pretty much a bust for most bettors. Most people putting money down on a major lay some cash on Tiger, Phil, Vijay, and maybe a couple of longshots or dark horses. Most books didn’t bother giving Johnson any odds and lumped him in with the field, but there were a few books that had Johnson at odds that would have paid off extremely well, including one that had Johnson listed as high as +15000.

More Active then Usual 2007 Hurricane Season
San Jose, Costa Rica (April 9, 2007) -The only thing better then complaining about the weather is betting on it and making some extra cash to put away for the next rainy day. One of the Internet’s biggest betting sites, WagerWeb.com is known for providing odds on more than just sports and they bolstered their diverse offerings this week by bringing back their popular hurricane odds.
Last year WagerWeb.com offered hurricane odds after the hurricane experts predicted an extremely busy hurricane season in 2006. That busy season never materialized though, as only five hurricanes were born in the Atlantic. This meant any bettors that trusted the experts? predictions saw their wagers get blown away.
“Last year many players lost a lot of money when the expert predictions came up short. This year early predictions are already calling for another active season, said WagerWeb CEO Dave Johnson. “We expect bettors once again to follow these predictions and bet ‘Over’ in many of our listed prop bets.”
The first 2007 predictions were announced last week and called for another season “much more active than usual.” Should bettors trust the experts’ instincts again or venture out on their own hoping for another season of calm water?

Kentucky Derby Preps
Hitting the Board in Two Major Kentucky Derby Preps Important
It's not whether you win or lose that counts in two significant 2007 Kentucky Derby preps on April 7, but whether you ran fairly well and at least hit the board.A promising invader from England is Medici Code. He dominated three routes but none longer than 1 1/16 miles on all weather tracks this year, winning by more than a total of 20 lengths. The son of Medicean worked six furlongs on March 29th in 1:14 1/5.
Meanwhile, only two of the 10 Wood Memorial winners since Seattle Slew in 1977 scored at Churchill Downs: Pleasant Colony in '81 and Fusaichi Pegasus in '00.
However, eight that hit the board in Aqueduct's showcase race at 1 1/8 miles smelled the roses. The latest: Monarchos in '01 and Funny Cide in '03.

Golf - The 2007 Masters Champions
The real golf season begins next weekend when the first major of the year, The Masters, tees off at Augusta National in Georgia. The reigning Masters champion may be Phil Mickelson, but he’ll have to battle Tiger Woods for all the headlines as he goes for his third green jacket. Woods, a four-time winner of this event, was last sized for a green jacket in 2005, but after already winning two PGA events this season the Augusta tailors may want to keep Woods’ measurements close at hand.
Unlike the other three majors. The Masters has been dominated by golf’s superstars for almost a decade. While relative unknowns like Michael Campbell and Todd Hamilton have won the U.S. and British Opens in recent years The Masters has been owned by the big names, specifically Woods and Mickelson. That may be due to the fact that the other three majors change their course every year, while The Masters is always played at Augusta. One other big difference is the much smaller field allowed to enter The Masters. In the past six years the only person not named Woods or Mickelson to put on a green jacket was Mike Weir in 2003. Considering that Weir has failed to even crack the Top 10 at any tournament so far this season, it’s highly doubtful he could be the one to break the Woods/Mickelson streak.Mickelson won last year’s golf tournament by two strokes over second-place finisher Tim Clark. Woods ended up in a five-way tie for third at four under par. Aside from the other big names such as Vijay Singh (2000 Masters Champ) and Ernie Els, a real darkhorse to upset Woods and Mickelson is Jose Maria Olazabal. The Spaniard has already won The Masters twice during his impressive career (1999, 1994) and he was one of the four golf game players that ended up tied with Woods for third place last season. Olazabal may not be off to a great start this season (his best PGA finish is 13th), but it’s not hard to see that he elevates his game for The Masters with five career Top 4 finishes.
Some other players to keep your eye on include three-time major champion Ernie Els, who’s still looking for his first green jacket; Sergio Garcia, still looking to break his majors curse; and Henrik Stenson, who already topped Woods once this season, but struggled at Augusta in his first Masters appearance last season.Chexk out our Golf Betting Odds at WagerWeb Sportsbook!!!
