2007 Belmont Stakes Betting Preview

Fear Factor Rears Its Head in Belmont Stakes

Welcome to 2007 horse racing's Fear Factor. The television series that ran from 2001 through last year captured the attention of many viewers.

Racing's version goes back many decades. I'm talking years and years. But the measure of success depends on your point of view. Let me count the ways.

In '73, only four horses challenged Secretariat in the third leg of his Triple Crown sweep for obvious reasons. Five years later the same number tried to derail Affirmed's gallop into Triple Crown history, among them Alydar, the runner-up all three times.

Fast forward to '94, when Go for Gin won the Kentucky Derby and Tabasco Cat took the Preakness. Only four others challenged the pair in the Belmont - for good reason. Tabasco Cat defeated Go for Gin by two lengths.

Three years later, Silver Charm and Free House scared away challengers and only five showed up. Unfortunately, one of them was Touch Gold, who denied Silver Charmer the Triple Crown by three-quarters of a length.

In '03, Funny Cide was trying to become the 12th Triple Crown champion and only five horses were entered.......

Big Brothers Back!!

Our Brothers Back

The 'greatest' TV show ever created returns to our screens tonight and we're so excited (well Paddy Power is).

Once again it will probably be filled with nutter's, transsexuals and the obligatory Irishman however thrown altogether it creates some quality TV.

DJ Spiral represented the Irish in last years show and duly embarrassed the whole nation with his rhyming vocals.

As the official bookmaker to the show, Paddy Power were given a sneak peak at this years list of contestants and it looks like there will be another Irish idiot taking part.

Then again they could be lying or as usual just making stuff up!

You'll have to tune in to Channel 4 tonight to be sure, to be sure.

The G-Spot: - So Many Styles

In the second of our articles on "The G-Spot", we take a look at the importance of knowing your opponents style

One of my favorite rap songs of all time is Raekwon’s Guillotine (Swordz). Halfway through the song, a clip from the martial arts move Shaolin vs. Lama is sampled. In it, the following dialogue occurs:

Combatant 1: “Weren’t you just using the Wu-Tang school method against me?”
Combatant 2: “I’ve learned so many styles. Forgive me.”

Read on, and you’ll see how this is related to poker.

First Impressions Last
Whatever happens during your first few hands at a table sticks for quite awhile. Most of your opponents will take whatever information they observe from you in your first five to ten minutes at the table, and they’ll use it to assign a player profile to you…a profile that they’ll use to make decisions against you.

Once a player has assigned such a profile to you, he usually won’t change it unless something surprising happens. Your opponents usually won’t suspect you of changing gears because, especially at lower and middle limits, most players aren’t capable of changing gears.

Master Many Styles
Know how your opponents perceive you, and take advantage by changing gears appropriately........

Poker Strategy Software

With the increase in popularity of online gambling, a new contender in the online poker industry has appeared on the scene: strategy software.

Strategy software has actually been around for ages, but has recently made new advancements to help poker players with their online playing abilities. The latest advancement in strategy software is a development that actually reads your cards as you play and helps you develop a winning strategy by providing logical and mathematical advice set to your playing style.

The main purpose of this type of strategy software is helping online poker players make educated decisions, quicker. These programs have been designed to be used in conjunction with online casino software, in a separate window running side-by-side with the actual playing table. The software programs use packet sniffing to virtually load every card you see at the poker table into the software. Almost all features about these programs are automated these days. You no longer have to manually select your hole card and board cards; the software does it all on the fly. The software will then display odds and offer advice and recommendations on each hand, depending upon the type of playing style you have set the software to use.

Using this type of software can benefit many different types of players in many different ways.

For newer players, these programs are very good tools to help you better understand pot odds, betting patterns, pot commitment, playing styles, and much more. Using these programs is almost like having a professional playing alongside you; you can easily advance your knowledge of the game in a short amount of time while gaining quality playing time experience.

If you’re a veteran or a more experienced player, you can still find great ways to use strategy software. Playing online can often require extremely quick thinking before timing out at a table. If you find yourself not having enough time to calculate pot odds and make logical decisions, these programs will help you tremendously. No matter how talented a player might be, this type of software can be beneficial….to read the rest of this article, visit The Betting Directory.

The G-Spot - Pleasure Your Poker Profits

Adjust Reads From Tight To Loose

No matter what specific variant of poker you’re playing, playing profitable poker is all about mastering the following process:

1. Put your opponents on hand distributions
2. Evaluate your own hand (or put yourself on a hand distribution if you’re playing a game like Blind Man’s Bluff)
3. Predict how your opponents will respond to every possible action you can make
4. Pick the most profitable line of play based on #1-#3

Today, we’ll focus on putting your opponents on hand distributions when you first sit at a table.

Default Distributions
Putting your opponents on hand distributions is all about reading your opponents’ betting patterns and picking off their physical tells. You don’t really have the ability to put your opponents on hand distributions until you’ve carefully observed them play for a few orbits. Does this mean that you should fold the first forty or fifty hands you’re dealt?

Hell no…especially if you’re playing at a shorthanded table or in a tournament. The good news is that you actually have information about players you’ve never seen in your life. Before you even play a single hand, you have all your past poker playing experience to draw upon, meaning that you can assign a default playing profile to each opponent before you see the table play a single hand. This default profile will be the average of all the poker players you typically face............to read rest of article visit The Poker Betting Column at The Betting Directory.

The 2007 Triple Crown: Preakness Stakes

The race for the 2007 Triple Crown resumes for Street Sense this Saturday, as he takes on a new batch of challengers (and a few familiar ones) in the 132nd running of the Preakness Stakes.

For those who don't know, the Preakness differs slightly from the 2007 Kentucky Derby in that it is a shorter horse race. The Derby is 1 1/4 miles long, while the Preakness comes in at only 1 3/16 miles. Not a whole lot of difference, but enough to make it a whole different kind of horse racing.

The favorite heading into the 2007 Preakness is of course the Derby champion, Street Sense. The three-year-old colt put on a masterful performance in the Derby, charging from 19th spot at the quarter pole to chase down the leaders and win by 2 ½ lengths at the wire. Street Sense went against all the usual history of a Derby winner by becoming the first Derby champ that had also won the Breeders' Cup Juvenile, and despite only running two prep races earlier in the season. Since Street Sense has already shown a knack for going against the history books, might he break the long-standing string of Triple Crown losers and finally replace Affirmed as the most recent Triple Crown winner?

Standing in Street Sense's way before he can make it two in a row are some of his Derby competitors, most notably Hard Spun, Curlin and Circular Quay.

Hard Spun stormed out to the lead at the Derby but could not hold off the charging Street Sense and had to settle for second place. Perhaps the shorter distance of the Preakness might be just what Hard Spun needs to get out in front of Street Sense and this time actually hold on to the lead.

Bet at WagerWebAffiliates

Curlin suffered the first defeat of his career in the Derby after finishing third behind Street Sense and Hard Spun. Curlin was considered one of the favorites in the Derby, but his inexperience finally caught up with him. Prior to the Derby Curlin had only taken part in three horse races, however he had easily won all of them. It's not overly surprising that Curlin lost the Derby when you consider the last horse with only three races under his belt to win the Derby was Apollo way back in 1882. Will having four races in the race can make much of a difference for Curlin at Pimlico?

Circular Quay was a late and somewhat surprising entry to the Preakness. Most experts expected his trainer, Todd Pletcher, to hold Circular Quay out of the Preakness and get him ready for the Belmont Stakes. Instead Circular Quay will try to make up for his disappointing sixth-place Derby finish in the Preakness. Circular Quay is the son of former Derby champion Thunder Gulch and even though he delivered an impressive win in the Louisiana Derby, he just didn't have it at Churchill Downs.

The rest of the confirmed field at the Preakness includes CP West, King of the Roxy (Pletcher's other entry), Xchanger, Flying First Class and Mint Slewlep. None of these horses took part in the Derby, but don't forget that last year's Preakness champ, Bernardini, also sat out the Derby before making his winning run at Pimlico.

2007 UFC 71-Liddell vs. Jackson

There's only one man that has beaten Chuck "The Iceman" Liddell that Liddell hasn't paid back with a beating. Chuck Liddell will get the chance to scratch that name off his vengeance list on May 25th when he faces Quinton "Rampage" Jackson in 2007 UFC 71.

Liddell has won his last seven matches, all by knockout or technical knockout. The Iceman hasn't tasted defeat since he faced Quinton Jackson in the PRIDE 2003 Middleweight Grand Prix. Liddell was the UFC representative in the event, while Jackson was signed on with PRIDE when he beat Liddell badly in a TKO decision.

Bet at WagerWebAffiliates

Since his loss to Rampage, Liddell has torn through the UFC with seven straight victories. All seven wins have come by knockout or TKO and have included two knockouts of Randy Couture and two TKO's of Tito Ortiz. Liddell is known as an excellent striker with pure power and he can also take out his opponent with quick accurate leg strikes. He's a well-rounded grappler, but if he has one weakness it would be on the ground in the octagon. If Liddell has his way the only thing on the ground will be Jackson, as he sprawls out on the mat after taking some wicked shots to the head.

Liddell may be a big betting favorite in this match and is considered by many to be the best MMA fighter in the world today, but don't count out Jackson. Jackson is nicknamed 'Rampage' for a reason, because he's an extremely powerful beast that is known to KO his opponents with lethal power slams. Jackson made his UFC debut versus Marvin Eastman in February at UFC 67 and finished off Eastman in the second round with a flurry of uppercuts that sent Eastman to the floor.

Liddell enters this match with a lifetime MMA record of 20-3, while Jackson is 26-6 in his MMA career. Liddell puts his UFC World Fight Heavyweight Championship title on the line in this fight and Jackson could make a real name for himself in the UFC if he can end Liddell's long reign at the top.

2007 UEFA Champions League Final-Liverpool vs. AC Milan

The last time Liverpool and A.C. Milan squared off, the soccer world was blessed with one of the best matches ever played. Soccer fans will be hoping for an encore of that match when the two teams clash again on May 23 in the 2007 UEFA Champions League Final at the Olympic Stadium in Athens, Greece.

This game is a rematch of the 2005 Champions League final, which Liverpool won on penalty kicks. That UEFA game is remembered by anyone who saw it because Liverpool staged an amazing comeback in the second half after falling behind 3-0. Liverpool scored three dramatic goals in a six-minute span and topped A.C. Milan 3-2 on penalties, with Smicer netting the game-winner.

A.C. Milan enters the rematch as a slight favorite after a mediocre season in the Italian Serie A. They finished in fourth place, 32 points back of first-place Inter Milan, due in part to a point deduction instituted because of match fixing. The player to watch for A.C. Milan is Kaka. The Brazilian striker scored 18 goals in 45 games this season and is the leading goal scorer in the UEFA Champions League with 10. Other dangerous players on A.C. Milan include striker Alberto Gilardino and Gennaro Gattuso, who is the leader of the team both on and off the field. Milan last won the Champions League back in 2003, when they defeated Juventus on penalty kicks after going scoreless in regulation and extra time.

Bet at WagerWebAffiliates

Liverpool pulled off a big upset over Chelsea in the Champions League semis, which is exactly what they did two years ago when they won it all. Liverpool had a somewhat disappointing season in the English Premiership where they finished the season in third place, 21 points back of Manchester United. Liverpool's top player this season has been the towering 6-foot-7 striker Peter Crouch, who scored 19 goals during the season including a team-high six in the Champions League. Steven Gerrard is also a scoring threat whenever he has the ball, while A.C. Milan will also be looking to stop Dirk Kuiyt and Xabi Alonso.

With no World Cup or Euro tournament this year, many soccer fans are calling this game the match of the season. If Liverpool and A.C. Milan can deliver even half the drama that the 2005 final presented, soccer fans and bettors alike should not be disappointed.

2007 UEFA Cup Final

Two Spanish soccer teams will meet up for the first time in the 2007 UEFA Cup Final game on Wednesday, when Sevilla battles Espanyol in Glasgow, Scotland.

The clear favorite heading into this match is Sevilla. They're the defending UEFA Cup champions and have had a much better season in the Spanish soccer league than Espanyol has had. Sevilla still has a real chance at winning the Spanish league title, as they sit only two points out of first place. If Sevilla could capture that title it would be a huge upset over frontrunners Barcelona and Real Madrid.

In the UEFA Cup Final the players to watch for on the Sevilla side include Fredi Kanoute, Luis Fabiano and Javier Chevanton. This lethal trio makes up one of the top strikeforces in the soccer world and so far in the UEFA they have been performing up to par, especially Fabiano who netted a goal in Sevilla's semifinal clincher versus Osasuna.

Sevilla also boasts one of the best midfielders in Daniel Alves. Alves is a superb setup man and has notched 16 assists this 2007 soccer season. Even with Alves at midfield, Sevilla could have a question mark at the position if Adriano Correia isn't ready to go. The Brazilian is a dynamic defensive presence, but has missed Sevillla's last two soccer games due to a strained thigh muscle. Adriano is expected back for the final, but he may not be at 100 percent.

For Espanyol to win this match they'll need more magic from Walter Pandiani. The striker from Uruguay was brought over from Birmingham City this year and so far the move has really paid off. Pandiani is the UEFA Cup scoring leader with 11 goals. If Pandiani can continue to find the back of the net with regularity and Espanyol can get something out of their other goal scorers ? Luis Garcia and Tamudo ? then they could have an upset on their hands. Espanyol should have plenty of motivation to bring the UEFA Cup home because it's unlikely they'll even be in the running for it next season. Espanyol currently sits in 12th place in the Spanish league, but only the Top 6 soccer teams earn a spot in the UEFA Cup next season.

Bet at WagerWebAffiliates

In last year's UEFA Cup Final played at Philips Satadion in Eindhoven, Sevilla trounced Middlesbrough 4-0. Fabiano scored Sevilla's first goal in the win, while Mareca scored twice and Kanoute buried the fourth goal of the game. Sevilla and Espanyol last met up way back on December 3, 2006 when Espanyol upset Sevilla 2-1. Kanoute gave Seville an early lead at the 25th minute in that game, but Garcia tied it up for Espanyol at the 68th minute. Kameni scored what turned out to be the game-winner for Espanyol in the 79th minute. Another close game is expected between the two Spanish clubs on Wednesday.

Bill introduced to study online gambling

WASHINGTON, DC — In another effort to roll back an Internet gambling ban, Rep. Shelley Berkley on Thursday introduced a bill calling for a one-year study of online wagering by the National Academy of Sciences.

“One of the advantages of this legislation is that it doesn’t take a side,” she said. “It doesn’t say Internet gambling is good or bad. It says ‘Let’s study the issue.’ ”

But Berkley, D-Nev., acknowledged she wants to repeal the Internet gambling ban approved last year by Congress.

“It’s very difficult to unring a bell once it has rung in Washington,” Berkley said. “But the ban was sneaked onto a port security bill, and the people who voted for it, including myself, were not contemplating a ban on Internet gambling.”

The measure was passed and signed into law in October.

Berkley’s bill comes one week after Rep. Barney Frank, D-Mass., proposed legislation to repeal the Internet gambling ban and require the Department of Treasury to regulate the $13 billion online wagering industry…..(to read rest of article, visit The Betting Directory.

The 2007 Indianapolis 500

It looks like race car driver Dan Wheldon really wants to get back to the winner's circle at the Brickyard. Wheldon won the Indianapolis 500 back in 2005 and looked to be on his way to a repeat win last year before car trouble dropped him to a fourth-place finish. Wheldon had led 148 of the 200 laps of last year's Indy 500 race but the only one that matters is the last lap, which Sam Hornish Jr. led by 0.0635 seconds over rookie Marco Andretti.

The 2007 Indy 500 may still be just over two weeks away, but Wheldon is already tearing up the practice sessions. In a rain-shortened second day of practice on Wednesday, Wheldon became the first driver this month to break the 226-mph mark at Indy. Wheldon took only seven laps to post a fastest lap of 226.391 mph (39.7543 seconds), which topped his leading time posted on the first practice day.

Wheldon isn't in the clear yet though, as the rest of the field still has time to reach the crucial 226-mph mark and steal the $100,000 pole award away from him. Two-time Indy 500 winner Helio Castroneves was the closest challenger to Wheldon on Wednesday after posting a sizzling 225.820 mph (39.8548 seconds). No other driver was able to crack 225 mph, with Wheldon's Target Chip Ganassi Racing teammate Scott Dixon posting the next-best time at 224.902 mph (40.0175 seconds).

Marco Andretti, looking to break the Andretti jinx at Indianapolis and improve on his second-place finish from a year ago, was next in line at 224.745 mph (40.0454 seconds) and he was followed by veteran Tony Kanaan at 224.112 mph (40.1585 seconds). Last year's Indy 500 champ, Hornish Jr., is still looking for his top speed after posting the sixth-best time of the day at 224.054 mph (40.1688).

The driver with the most eyes on her at all times, Danica Patrick, will need to find a way to boost her speed by the time raceday rolls around if she finally hopes to make it to the winner's circle. Patrick's AGR teammate Dario Franchitti came seventh on Wednesday after posting a time of 223.844 (40.2065 seconds), which was two places better than Patrick's time. Patrick was ninth best on the day with a top time of 223.476 mph (40.2728 seconds).

A 0.418-second differential may not seem like much, but it can actually be an eternity in car racing. Marco Andretti would have loved to be an extra 0.418 seconds below his Indy 500 time in last year's race, considering only 0.0635 seconds separated him from a place alongside his famous grandfather Mario as an Indy 500 champion.

Preakness Is a Most Historic Triple Crown Jewel

Ulysses S. Grant was president, the U.S. population was 38,558,371 and there were 37 states when Pimlico Race Course opened in Baltimore.

In 1868, Maryland Gov. Oden Bowie and his friends, prominent racing figures, agreed at a dinner party in Saratoga to commemorate the evening with a horse race in two years for yearlings at the time.

Both Saratoga, the first U.S. horse track that debuted four years earlier, and the American Jockey Club bid for the event. But Bowie pledged to build a model track in Maryland if the race was staged there.

Two years later, the Dinner Party Stakes was launched for 3-year-old colts and fillies at two miles. It's now known as the Dixie Handicap. In 1873, Pimlico introduced a new race for 3-year-olds named for the inaugural Dinner Stakes winner: Preakness.

On a warm, muggy May 27, seven horses raced 1 ½ miles before a crowd of 12,000. The winner of the first Preakness was Survivor, who stormed home by 10 lengths, the largest margin of victory for 13 decades until Smarty Jones cruised to an 11 ½-length victory.

The race, at 12 furlongs until 1890 except for 1 ¼ miles in 1889, has been run at seven different distances from a mile to 1 1/8 miles until 1924. The next year, the current 1 3/16 miles was inaugurated.

In '06, a record 118,402 turned out for the Preakness - the largest crowd to witness a sporting event in Maryland.

The morning after Street Sense scored by 2 ¼ lengths in the 133rd Kentucky Derby, winning horse racing trainer Carl Nafzger immediately informed the Marylard Jockey Club that the son of Street Cry will race in the $1 million Preakness on May 19.

There could be as many as a dozen starters in the 131st Preakness. Up to five also-rans at Churchill Downs could challenge Street Sense, including Hard Spun, the runner-up that led the first eight furlongs of the 1 ¼ miles, and Curlin, who rallied from eighth a quarter-mile out to finish third.

Only two that skipped America's Race in the past 16 years won at Pimlico: Bernardini last year and Red Bullet in '00. Ironically, during that time span, there were fewer than 10 starters both years: Nine in '06 and seven in '00.

Of six horses that bypassed Louisville for the expected trip to Baltimore, three are most likely to race: Santa Anita runner-up King of the Roxy, trained by Todd Pletcher who went 0 for 5 at Churchill Downs; Chelokee, third in the Florida Derby; and Flying First Class, victorious in the Derby Trial.
