The G-Spot: Lessons from the Ladies

By Tony Guerrera

The Situation

A player I coach was recently involved in an instructional hand at the $1,000 buy-in ladies’ event at the The Bicycle Casino’s 2007 Legends of Poker. Her table had seven or eight players. UTG, an aggressive chip leader, raised to 4 big blinds. Action folded to my player, who held JJ in late position. When talking about this hand, my player mentioned to me that the raise to 4 big blinds was odd...whenever UTG raised, it was always to 5 big blinds. I won’t dismiss the possibility that UTG bet 4 big blinds accidentally; however, players who consistently raise to the same amount preflop tend to be very ritualistic. Something significant is happening when such a player raises to a different amount in his poker hands.

A fundamental law of reading players is the following: people tend to do things differently when they have big hands (to extract value) or when they are stone-cold bluffing (to minimize risk). UTG had a history of raising with a wide range of hands, meaning that she probably didn’t care about minimizing risk. Additionally, even generally aggressive players tend to raise with narrower distributions in early position.....to read rest of article, visit the Poker Betting Column at the Betting Directory.

NFL Preseason: Friday Football Games Betting Previews

The NFL's preseason comes to an end tonight, and some would say mercifully so. The games don't count and you never know who will play for how long. Yet there is money to be made by NFL bettors, so here is a breakdown of Friday night's two football games:

Baltimore Ravens (1-2) at Atlanta Falcons (2-1), 7:30 p.m. ET: If you read my article on Monday and bet on the Falcons to cover at home against the Bengals you were a winner, as Atlanta won the game 24-19. QB Joey Harrington was quite solid vs. Cincinnati, going 13-for-24 for 164 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. However, that was against a not-so-good Bengals defense.

The Ravens, meanwhile, looked great in their preseason opener, a 29-3 rout of the Philadelphia Eagles, but have dropped their past two games and haven't scored more than 12 points in either. Baltimore did get some good news this week when Jonathan Ogden was activated off the PUP list and practiced on Tuesday. ...to read rest of article visit NFL news at the Betting Directory

King Cashalot is a 5 reel, 9 line, multiple coin, progressive video slot game with a wild multiplier and scatter symbol and a fun, three chances, player choice bonus feature. The theme is, as the name suggests Medieval and the brightly colored artwork abounds with golden dragons and beautiful damsels, sumptuous feasts and a host of colorful characters, all backed with stunning sound effects.

Adding to the excitement are Wild Multiplier and Scatter symbols coupled with a humorous theme that ensures you will be thoroughly entertained. The Jester is the scatter symbol, through which wins calculated on the total number of credits staked are added to payline wins.

King Cashalot is the symbol to watch for however, because being a Wild Multiplier he will double your money, when completing a valid winning combination. He substitutes for all symbols except Scatters and the Treasure Bonus symbol.

The bonus feature is particularly rewarding, and is triggered by the King's pet Golden Dragon. Scattered on reels 2, 3 and 4, when hit this mythical creature opens the royal vault, where generous King Cashalot himself offers the player 3 chances to keep or pick again from 8 bulging Treasure Chests.

NFL Preseason: Young QB's in Week 4 Spotlight

The final week of NFL preseason action gets underway on Thursday as football teams are making their final cuts. Brady Quinn, Rex Grossman, Matt Leinart and Jay Cutler will all be in the spotlight as the regular season looms. Here's a look at a pair of key Thursday matchups.

Cleveland at Chicago (-4)

This will be the final test for Brady Quinn as the Cleveland Browns head to Soldier Field to face the Chicago Bears, who have one of the best defenses in the league. The Browns' brass has been saying that the rookie quarterback is not going to open the season as a starter, but Quinn has made the decision more difficult with two sparkling performances against the Detroit Lions and the Denver Broncos.

The Bears have been attempting to correct their own woes at the quarterback position, and Rex Grossman has looked like he has improved over last season. But the young quarterback is still having troubles with taking the snap cleanly from the center, which is something that must drive head coach Lovie Smith nuts......to read rest of article visit NFL News at the Betting Directory

The G-Spot: Odds Breakdown

By Tony Guerrera

Two types of odds are important in poker: card odds and payout odds. And payout odds can be broken down into three categories: pot odds, implied odds, and reverse implied odds. Understanding all these types of odds will help you make sound decisions at the tables.

Card Odds

Card odds have to do with hitting poker hands. Suppose you have a flush draw on the turn. Not accounting for reads you may have on your opponents, there are 46 unknown cards in the deck, 9 of which give you a flush. The odds against you hitting your flush are 37:9 (4.11:1).

To draw profitably, your payout odds need to exceed your card odds. In this example, your payout odds need to be at least $4.11:$1.

Pot Odds

Your pot odds are the ratio of the amount of money in the pot to the amount of money you need to call. Let’s take the flush draw example from above......to read rest of this article visit the Poker Betting Column at the Betting Directory

2007 NFL Preseason: NFC North vs. AFC

Heading into Week 3 of NFL football preseason action, the NFC North has three teams at 2-0 while the AFC heavy hitters are getting off to a slow start.

NFC North

The Bears, Lions and Packers are all 2-0 before their third preseason game, and the Bears gained a small bit of Super Bowl revenge with their 27-24 win at Indianapolis on Monday. However, the inconsistency of Rex Grossman reared its ugly head as the young quarterback threw an interception and fumbled three times, including twice from snaps. Grossman was accurate with his short passing, but he cannot afford to turn the ball over.

The Lions' offense has looked very potent so far this preseason, following a 548-yard performance with another 310 yards in a 23-20 at Cleveland. Jon Kitna was brilliant at Cleveland by going 12-for-16 for 137 yards and a touchdown, but allowing 20 fourth-quarter points to the Browns could be a cause for concern. Of course, those were third and fourth-string players out there at that point......to read rest of story, visit NFL News at the Betting Directory

2007 NFL Preseason Game: Saints at Chiefs

After struggling to find the end zone in their first two preseason football contests, the New Orleans Saints got their high-powered offense rolling again last Saturday against Cincinnati Bengals. The Saints defeated Cincinnati 27-19 as 3.5-point underdogs after scoring on their first three possessions. The Saints will try to keep their offense moving on Thursday when they head to Kansas City to battle the Chiefs.

In last week's contest Drew Brees had his best football game of the preseason despite throwing to a depleted collection of receivers. Both Marques Colston and Devery Henderson sat out Saturday, Colston to rest some sore legs and Henderson to give an injured hamstring some time to heal. Without his two biggest targets Brees completed 6-of-6 passes for 55 yards in his only series.

Deuce McAllister ended the first drive of the game with a six-yard touchdown run and finished the night with three carries for 15 yards. Reggie Bush also got in on the action with a second-quarter touchdown run, as he ended his night early as well with four carries for 13 yards. Third-string rookie running back Antonio Pittman ran in for a one-yard TD in the fourth quarter as the Saints scored more points against Cincinnati than they had in their first two preseason games combined......to read rest of article visit NFL News at the Betting Directory.

The G-Spot: Calling for Value

When thinking about how to extract maximal value from our good hands, our minds usually turn towards aggressive play. We think about the bet amount that will yield the highest possible profits. Against passive opponents, this instinct to bet is usually correct. Against aggressive opponent, it can cost you money.

Don’t Deter Aggressive Opponents

Some opponents pounce on any signs of weakness. Check the turn to them after betting the flop, and they will bet into you. Some of them will call you with absolutely nothing on the flop with the intention of bluffing on the turn or the river–especially when scare cards hit. However, if you continually show aggression, these opponents will fold.

Your aggressive opponents will bet with a much larger range of hands than they will call with. When you have monster hands, trap these opponents for lots of chips by raising the bets you induce from them. When you have good (but vulnerable) hands like top-pair-top-kicker, simply call these opponents down.

Think of Value Betting in Position on the River

To consider why check-calling with good (but vulnerable) hands can sometimes be optimal, let’s think about when to bet in position on the river. When you’re last to act on the river and a single opponent has checked to you, a good value bet is one which will be called by a worse hand more than half of the time. Your opponents’ calling distribution determines the efficacy of a value bet... to read rest of this article visit the Poker Betting Column at the Betting Directory.

Bad Beat jackpot winnings top $1.2 million

If you thought winning at Texas Hold'em was rewarding, wait until you hear how lucrative losing can be. Absolute Poker today announced that $1,297,394.94 in jackpot money has been won since the popular online poker site launched Bad Beat Jackpot on June 22nd.

"In less than seven weeks, our players have won an unfathomable amount of cash at our Bad Beat Jackpot tables," stated David Clainer, senior vice president for Absolute Poker. "The numbers we released today amount to an average of $185,000 being paid out every week for losing hands."

The latest jackpot was claimed on August 7th by DAMETGARM who lost four nines to a straight flush and instantly won over $50,000 for his loss.

If a player loses a hand holding four 8s or anything better at a Bad Beat Jackpot table, they'll win a piece of the Bad Beat Jackpot. A percentage of the jackpot is shared amongst the players where the bad beat occurred and a fraction of the jackpot is placed back into the pot for the next jackpot.

The nearly $1.3 million figure includes money won by all players every time the jackpot has been hit. It does not take into account pots won through regular Texas Hold'em play at the Bad Beat Jackpot tables.

The G-Spot: Adjust Reads From Tight To Loose

No matter what specific variant of poker you’re playing, playing profitable poker is all about mastering the following process:

1. Put your opponents on hand distributions
2. Evaluate your own hand (or put yourself on a hand distribution if you’re playing a game like Blind Man’s Bluff)
3. Predict how your opponents will respond to every possible action you can make
4. Pick the most profitable line of play based on #1-#3

Today, we’ll focus on putting your opponents on hand distributions when you first sit at a table.

Default Distributions

Putting your opponents on hand distributions is all about reading your opponents’ betting patterns and picking off their physical tells. You don’t really have the ability to put your opponents on hand distributions until you’ve carefully observed them play for a few orbits. Does this mean that you should fold the first forty or fifty hands you’re dealt?

Hell no…especially if you’re playing at a shorthanded table or in a tournament. The good news is that you actually have information about players you’ve never seen in your life. Before you even play a single hand, you have all your past poker playing experience to draw upon, meaning that you can assign a default playing profile to each opponent before you see the table play a single hand. This default profile will be the average of all the players you typically face.....to read rest of this article, visit the Poker Betting Column at the Betting Directory.

Pensioner Wins £1m Online Bingo Jackpot

Life will never be the same again for 62 year old Pauline Clarke, from Bristol, who has just won KerChingo, the first ever million pound bingo game in history, from Gala Bingo.

To help celebrate, Gala has whisked Pauline and friends away to enjoy their first taste of a millionaire’s lifestyle. Collected in a chauffer driven limo, they have been treated to a champagne breakfast at the luxurious Hotel Du Vin as they begin to re-adjust.

“I’m absolutely shocked. My heart is still racing. I’ve played bingo for years; in fact I won £6,000 in the National Game 12 years ago. However, I’ve only been playing online for two months. Two weeks ago I played online, putting £5 on my account, and with my last 60 pence I played the KerChingo Qualifying Game. To my surprise I won the full house which meant I won £50 and a KerChingo Final Game ticket.

“I had always thought that I would win big and I do remember that a clairvoyant once said to me I’d never be stuck for cash, but when I needed to retire from work two years ago due to stress, I wondered what she could have meant!”

Damian Cope, Managing Director, Gala Coral E-Commerce, added: “Galabingo.co.uk has created the world's first ever bingo millionaire, taking bingo to a whole new level. Gala is the market leader in Bingo, but the fact that KerChingo has made one lucky player a millionaire, is just another example of why thousands of people play bingo with Gala every week - in club, online and on Gala TV.”

KerChingo has made bingo history by being the first bingo game with a guaranteed million-pound prize. In order to take part Pauline and the other 14,999 finalists had to win a KerChingo final ticket by playing special KerChingo qualifying games online and on Gala TV (sky digital channel 841). The final game was then streamed online, and broadcast live on Gala TV on Sunday night.

The introduction of bespoke Bingo Chat Games to leading online gaming destination, River Belle's (www.riverbellebingo.com) already popular bingo offering, has seen players flocking to its online bingo halls in search of hours of fun and entertainment in a highly social environment.

Said Tim Johnson, Chairman of Carmen Media, which owns River Belle: " Although River Belle Bingo has offered online bingo chat games, supplied by software supplier Virtue Fusion, since its launch in November last year, the new River Belle Bingo Chat Games introduced a few months ago, were designed exclusively for River Belle Bingo players."

And it is these new chat games that have taken the River Belle online bingo halls by storm, creating a fast growing River Belle Bingo community. Whilst players can access the online bingo halls at any time, the River Belle Bingo Chat Games are available daily between 12 noon and 2pm and again between 6pm and 8pm. Games start every five minutes. As the online halls are teaming at these times, it is clear that the introduction of the variety of new games such as TV quizzes, horror movie trivia, Bingo Blitzes and best one-liners, all overseen by a Chat Moderator, is a winning recipe.

Reminiscent of traditional bingo rooms, players can play slot games between scheduled bingo games and socialize with friends in the chat rooms. The introduction of realistic bingo sounds and icons all contribute to a visually interesting, interactive and authentic bingo experience. To add to the excitement, new visitors to River Belle Bingo receive a 100% welcome bonus on their first deposit up to 50 pounds sterling. With product innovation and diversity being some of the major criteria used by influential EGaming Review for the compilation of its annual Power 50 list, it comes as no surprise that Carmen Media ranks 17th and that www.riverbelle.com has been voted one of the top 50 gaming sites in the world.

The G-Spot: Check Your Ego at the Door

Poker hand analysis and poker playing can be an ego-driven enterprise, as will any setting involving competition, money, glitz, glamour, and the chance to eviscerate and crush one’s foes. Our egos swell when we bluff successfully, and they shrink when our opponents bluff successfully. We feel like kings of the world when opponents make losing calls against us, and we feel like donkeys when we make losing calls. Ego pitfalls are everywhere.

Example of Ego Running the Show

Suppose you’re in a shorthanded game and just crushing it: raise, continuation bet, everyone folds. Next case! Suddenly, a new player arrives, and he starts preempting all your bully behavior and bluff runs. At this point, it’s natural to feel thwarted. Frustration blooms, and you find yourself thinking, “Who the hell does this dickweed think he is? This is my game, not his. I’m gonna show this bitch what’s up!” Next thing you know, you’re making decisions that are purely ego-based. All strategic thought processes have halted and then, well, you’re doomed. Especially since you’re playing shorthanded, where the pace of play amplifies small errors and turns tiny leaks into flash floods.

    Avoid Value Judgments

A big part of ego in poker is assigning labels to players. Player A is a donkey. Player B is a fish. Player C is horrible. These labels do nothing to help you while you’re playing. Identifying a player as good or bad doesn’t tell you how to play against that person........to read remainder of article visit the Poker Betting Column at the Betting Directory.
