England prepare for South African test

England (11/4) begin the first of three Test matches against South Africa (15/8) on Thursday in a series which will provide the best chance yet to gauge the progress made under coach Peter Moores. After suffering a narrow defeat to India at the start of last summer, Moore's men took care of the West Indies, before registering series wins home and away to New Zealand.

South Africa, ranked second in the ICC's world Test rankings, represent by far the sternest challenge England have come up against with Moores at the helm. With a batting line-up capable of comprising huge totals and a dangerous bowling attack, it is no surprise the Proteas are 10/11 to take the series, with England 7/4 and a draw available at 10/3

With the last three Tests at Lords ending in a draw, punters may be tempted by an offer of evens on another stalemate. South Africa certainly have the batting strength for lengthy crease occupation, with captain Graeme Smith hoping to replicate his 259 at headquarters in 2003, one of two double centuries he managed in that series.

Smith is 11/10 to make a half century in South Africa's first innings and 7/2 to go all the way to three figures. The Western Province opener has been quizzed over his attitude towards England mid-order maestro Kevin Pietersen after controversial KP - a South African by birth - branded Smith "a muppet" in his autobiography.

"Touring around England is a fantastic experience," said Smith. "But Kevin and I would get on a lot better if he kept his mouth shut. That's how he gets fired up. I'll just get on with my cricket."

Pietersen is England's form batsman, coming into the series on the back of a crucial 115 at Trent Bridge. The imperious inventor - who could have revolutionised the game with his infamous 'switch-hit' shot - is 6/1 joint favourite to score the most runs in the match, along with Jacques Kallis and Smith - he is also available at 7/2 to start the series in style with a first innings ton.

On the bowling front, England will have to wait to welcome former talisman Andrew Flintoff back into the Test arena, after the selectors chose to give the all-rounder more recovery time from a troublesome side strain.

That leaves the Ryan Sidebottom with the familiar responsibility of leading the pace attack - the Nottinghamshire seamer is 7/4 to take more South African wickets than any other Englishman, with Monty Panesar 5/2 after his heroic 6-37 in the second innings of the second Test against New Zealand at Old Trafford earlier in the summer. James Anderson (3/1) and Stuart Broad (5/1) can also be backed to be top England wicket taker.

For the South Africans, paceman Dale Steyn is 6/5 to take the most English scalps over the three Tests, with Makhaya Ntini 3/1 and Morne Morkel 4/1.

While England's team is in a transitional period after the dismantling of the side which secured the Ashes in 2005, South Africa boast an experienced a set-up with a well-drilled winning mentality.
